The Technics SL-1210GME Master Edition is a high-end direct-drive turntable and the final, worldwide-limited-to-1,210-units evolution of the SL-1200G line. Because supplier parts are running out, Technics is ending production of the SL-1200G/1210G after more than 50 years – no successor to this flagship line has been announced, while the regular SL-1200 models such as the SL-1200GR2 continue independently of that. Miss the 1210GME, and you miss the final stage of this top class that has shaped both DJ booths and living rooms alike since the seventies.

Why the SL-1210GME?

At its core sits a coreless twin-rotor direct-drive motor that eliminates the dreaded pole cogging by design. The ΔΣ-Drive control smooths out the last micro-fluctuations in speed before they ever become audible – the result is wow and flutter of 0.025% WRMS, a figure that otherwise only markedly more expensive turntables can match. If you've thought until now that a direct drive is only good for DJing, you simply haven't heard this one yet.

What you hear / get / experience

The gold-lacquered magnesium tonearm brings low effective mass and high rigidity – exactly the combination that finely detailed cartridges demand. The four-layer chassis construction and the αGEL damping feet keep floor-borne vibration and cabinet resonance at bay, so the stylus tracks only the groove, not the living-room floor. Add to that the numbered Master Edition plaque in deep black with gold accents – a collector's piece you recognise at a glance, even from the outside.

Who is the SL-1210GME suited for? (and who it isn't)

Straight talk: the SL-1210GME is meant for connoisseurs who know they're buying an audiophile reference turntable AND a collector's piece – not for anyone who just wants to quickly drop a record on. A cartridge is deliberately not included; you choose one to suit your ear and your budget yourself (we're happy to advise you on that). If you only listen to vinyl occasionally and have no soft spot for limited editions, you're better served price-wise by a model from the regular SL-1200GR2 line – it plays in a technically similar league, just without the gold accents and without the production limit.

Our verdict

Between "good" and "that's it, this form factor has nothing more to give," at Technics there is apparently exactly one Master Edition update. The SL-1210GME isn't a facelift, but the deliberate final line drawn under one of the most influential turntable lines of all time – and HD Zürisee in Wädenswil has secured a share of the last worldwide units before they're gone for good.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cartridge included with the SL-1210GME?
No, the SL-1210GME is deliberately supplied without a cartridge. The universal tonearm and headshell fit practically any common MM or MC system. That way you choose the system that matches your taste in music and your budget, instead of accepting a fixed compromise. We're happy to advise you on choosing from our range.

How many SL-1210GME units exist worldwide?
Technics has limited worldwide production to 1,210 numbered units, identifiable by the gold plaque on the housing. Once that quantity is sold, there's no further production run – unlike with regular models, there's no second batch here. We only still carry our last, already secured remaining units.

Will a new SL-1200 model follow the Master Edition?
Not for the SL-1200G line itself: with the Master Edition, Technics is ending its production after more than 50 years, and no successor has been announced. The SL-1200 series as a whole continues, though – models like the current SL-1200GR2 keep being produced unchanged, independently of this. If you specifically want this G line with the Master Edition plaque, you need it now; a reissue is not in sight.

Do I additionally need a phono preamp?
Yes, unless your amplifier already has its own phono input. The SL-1210GME delivers a raw, unamplified phono signal straight from the cartridge. We're happy to recommend a suitable phono stage for MM or MC systems, matched to the cartridge you've chosen and the rest of your system.

Is the SL-1210GME meant more for a DJ booth or a listening room?
Both are possible – the black housing and the pitch fader deliberately recall the series' DJ roots. Sonically and in build quality, though, the Master Edition is clearly designed for audiophile music lovers, less for the rough everyday use of a club.

Why buy the Technics SL-1210GME at HD Zürisee?
We've specialised in hi-fi and high-end since 1997 and have known the SL-1200 series from our own experience for decades. For a piece this limited, we're happy to advise you on cartridge, phono stage and setup, so this fine piece shows its full potential right from the start.
