The Technics SP-10R is a Reference Class direct-drive motor unit – the pure drive unit with a coreless motor and an external control and power supply unit, from which you can build an individual turntable.
It's the same heart that also beats inside the complete SL-1000R – here on its own, for anyone who wants to choose the plinth and tonearm to their own taste.
Why the SP-10R?
Because it brings the legendary SP-10 idea into the present: a direct drive that studios worldwide made the standard, reissued with a coreless motor. It turns the heavy three-layer platter with high torque in perfectly even rotation – no cogging, no ageing belt, no compromises. The separate control unit keeps electrical interference away from the signal path. If you're configuring your dream turntable yourself, here you get the uncompromising foundation for it.
What you get
The foundation for reference sound. The SP-10R delivers the stable, ultra-quiet rotation on which a great analogue system is built – you determine the rest with plinth, tonearm and cartridge. In the right setting you hear what a truly quiet drive means: a black background, a firm sonic image and a dynamics that swallows nothing. A building block for people who know exactly what they want.
Who is the SP-10R suited for? (and who it isn't – plain talk)
Plain talk: The SP-10R is for analogue enthusiasts and DIY builders who are planning a turntable around an uncompromising drive – with their own plinth and their own tonearm. Anyone who wants a ready-to-play complete turntable from a single source is better off with the SL-1000R or a class below. Without a matching plinth and tonearm, the SP-10R is not a finished turntable, but explicitly the foundation for one.
Our verdict
The SP-10R is a piece of direct-drive history, reimagined: the uncompromising drive unit for an individual reference turntable. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil we help you combine plinth, tonearm and cartridge sensibly – so the motor ultimately becomes a turntable that matches your vision.

Frequently asked questions
Is the SP-10R a ready-to-play turntable?
No. The SP-10R is the motor and drive unit without a plinth or tonearm. To play records, you add a matching plinth and a tonearm. That's exactly the appeal: you build your turntable to your own vision – we help you with the selection.
What's the difference to the SL-1000R?
The SL-1000R is the complete reference turntable: SP-10R drive plus a heavy plinth and a magnesium tonearm, ready to play from the factory. The SP-10R is just the drive – for anyone who wants to determine the plinth and tonearm themselves. Same heart, different freedom.
Which tonearm should I pair it with?
That depends on the plinth, cartridge and sonic goal. The drive is neutral enough to harmonise with many high-quality tonearms. Which combination makes technical and sonic sense is something we're happy to discuss individually – that involves experience you rarely find online.
