The Technics SL-1210GR2 + Ortofon MC-X40 set is a ready-to-play Grand Class direct-drive turntable, with the Ortofon MC-X40 mounted and aligned by us at the factory.

In short: unbox, set up, connect to the phono stage – and drop the needle. No mounting, no aligning, no guesswork.

Why this set?

Because the SL-1210GR2 is one of the most sensible direct drives in its class – and here you don't get it without a cartridge. The ironless coreless motor runs without cogging, and the ΔΣ-Drive control smooths out the rotation even further: a remarkably quiet, stable speed stability that Technics is famous for. Add to that the proven S-shaped tonearm with removable headshell. Instead of buying the turntable and cartridge separately and aligning it yourself, you get a fully matched unit here.

What you'll hear

Order and calm. The direct drive keeps the speed so stable that notes stand firm and the bass doesn't wobble – clean, dynamic, and pleasantly effortless. The MC-X40 is the top model of the MC-X series with a bare diamond stylus: very finely resolving and open – the most sonically demanding partner in this set selection. Because the tracking force and alignment are already spot-on from us, the combination sits right from the very first groove.

Who's this set for? (and who isn't it for – honestly)

Honestly: This set is for vinyl listeners who want the genuine Technics direct drive with a high-quality moving-coil cartridge – fully mounted. Being upfront about it: the Ortofon MC-X40 needs an MC-capable phono stage. If you only have an MM input, we'll factor in the right stage for you. If you'd rather keep things simple on an MM input, go for one of our 2M or Concorde Music sets.

Our verdict

A well-rounded, ready-to-play package: a solid Grand Class turntable, a well-matched MC-X40, everything mounted and aligned. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, our technician Mauri sets up the set cleanly, recommends the right phono stage, and delivers it fully ready to go on request.

Frequently asked questions

What's included in the SL-1210GR2 + MC-X40 set?
The Technics SL-1210GR2 direct-drive turntable and the Ortofon MC-X40, mounted and aligned by us at the factory. All you need is a suitable phono stage (MM or MC-capable) and your system – the turntable and cartridge are already fully matched to each other.

What does the MC-X40 bring sonically?
The MC-X40 is the top of the MC-X range: bare diamond, very fine tracking, open and spacious reproduction. It needs a good MC-capable phono stage but rewards it with the highest sound quality in this set selection. The logical choice for ambitious vinyl listeners.

Do I still need a phono preamp?
Yes – and it needs to be MC-capable. Moving-coil cartridges output a lower voltage than MM and need a phono stage with higher gain and matching impedance. Many integrated amps only have MM on board. We'll check your chain and recommend a suitable MC stage if needed.

Why buy the SL-1210GR2 set at HD Zürisee?
Because "ready to play" at our place really means ready to play: our technician Mauri mounts and aligns the MC-X40 cleanly, we recommend the right phono stage, and deliver it fully ready to go on request. As an experienced team, we take the time for your system. Questions? Call us (+41 44 680 22 00), send an email, or a WhatsApp message.
