The Technics SL-1200GR2 is a Grand Class direct-drive turntable that combines the coreless motor with the new ΔΣ-drive control and a statically balanced S-shaped tonearm into a highly precise entry point into the Grand Class.
In short: the most accessible route to genuine Technics direct drive – and for many, the ideal balance between price and sound.
Why the SL-1200GR2?
Because it cleverly scales down the core technology of the pricier models. The coreless motor runs without cogging, and the new ΔΣ-drive control smooths out rotation even further – the result is remarkably calm, stable speed stability. Add to that the proven S-shaped tonearm with removable headshell, which tracks well with many cartridges. Solid, low-maintenance, and built to last – classic Technics, just more affordable.
What you'll hear
Order and calm. The SL-1200GR2's drive keeps speed so stable that notes stand firm and the bass doesn't wobble. The sound is clean, dynamic, and pleasantly effortless – exactly the virtues direct drive is loved for. With a good cartridge, it pulls a remarkable amount of detail out of the groove without ever sounding harsher than the record actually is.
Who's the SL-1200GR2 for? (and who isn't it for – let's be direct)
Let's be direct: the GR2 is for newcomers and upgraders who want genuine Technics direct drive without jumping straight into the top league. What you should know: cartridge and phono preamp aren't built in – you'll need to add those. If you want maximum flywheel mass and the magnesium tonearm, look at the SL-1200G/1210G; if you just want to get started quickly and affordably, you'll find more suitable options further down.
Our verdict
The SL-1200GR2 is one of the most sensible turntables in its class: solidly built, technically up to date, and sonically well above what the price suggests. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we set it up with a matching cartridge and phono stage so you hear the full result from day one.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference to the SL-1200G / SL-1210G?
The GR2 uses the same coreless direct-drive concept but comes with a lighter platter and an aluminium instead of a magnesium tonearm. The larger model offers more flywheel mass and a finer arm. For most people, the GR2 is the smarter starting point; if you want the maximum, go up a level.
Does the SL-1200GR2 come with everything needed to play records?
Almost. The turntable itself is complete, but the cartridge and phono preamp are separate. Many amplifiers already have a phono input; otherwise, add a small phono stage. We'll put together a well-matched, ready-to-play combination for you – assembled on request.
Is the GR2 also suitable for occasional DJing?
It's robust enough, and the pitch control is precise. But its home is the hi-fi shelf, not the club: it's optimised for clean sound, not scratch abuse. For serious listening at home, it's exactly the right choice.
Why buy the SL-1200GR2 from HD Zürisee?
Because we make getting started easy: our technician Mauri mounts and aligns the cartridge, we recommend the right phono stage, and deliver ready to play on request. Questions about placement or system matching? Call us (+41 44 680 22 00) or write to us – we take the time.
