The Rega Planar 6 RS Edition is a near-high-end turntable that combines the RB880 tonearm and the flagship MM cartridge Nd9 from higher-tier ranges, factory-fitted – a fully matched complete package in a brushed-aluminium finish, including the Neo MK2 power supply.
Why the Planar 6 RS Edition?
The RS Edition (Rega Special) borrows generously from the Planar 8: the precision RB880 tonearm with stainless steel counterweight and the high-quality bearing assembly. Add to that the Nd9, Rega's best MM cartridge, with boron cantilever and Fine Line diamond – factory-fitted and aligned. The Nd9 is something special: it's the only MM cartridge on the market that combines a neodymium magnet with a boron cantilever – a cantilever previously used only in Rega's flagship Aphelion 2. It's all driven by the hand-matched 24V motor via a CNC double pulley and two EBLT belts, controlled by the included Neo MK2 power supply. Straight talk: bought separately, the tonearm and cartridge would account for nearly the whole package price – here you get both practically thrown in with the turntable.
What you'll hear
Pace and articulation. The Planar 6 RS plays remarkably quick and transparent without ever sounding thin – the Nd9's boron cantilever traces fine structures cleanly, the double-layer float glass platter keeps speed steady. Whether frantic jazz or a delicate singer-songwriter recording: it sounds tidy and alive.
Who is the Planar 6 RS Edition for?
For anyone looking for the best worry-free turntable around CHF 2,300 who doesn't want to choose and fit a cartridge themselves – here everything comes fully ready. Straight talk: the RB880 and the Nd9 come in this combination only as the RS Edition, you can neither order a different cartridge nor get the turntable without a system. If you want maximum flexibility with the cartridge, take a look at the standard Planar 6.
Our verdict
A small price-performance hammer with serious upper-class engineering. The Planar 6 RS plays clearly above its price class and, thanks to the complete package, is ready to enjoy straight away. The specialist magazine hi-fi+ named it the most attractive current Rega turntable in issue 256. At HD Zürisee on Lake Zurich we'll show you which phono stage and speakers get the most out of it.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Planar 6 RS come with a cartridge?
Yes. The RS Edition comes factory-fitted with the Rega Nd9, Rega's best MM cartridge with boron cantilever. It's already fitted and aligned – you basically just put the record on. No separate cartridge purchase needed.
Do I need a phono preamp for the Planar 6 RS?
Yes. The Planar 6 RS has no built-in phono stage. Since the Nd9 is an MM cartridge, an MM-capable phono preamp is sufficient, such as the Rega Fono MM. Many integrated amplifiers already have a phono input – we're happy to check that for your system.
What's the difference from the standard Planar 6?
The RS Edition gets the higher-tier RB880 tonearm and the Nd9 cartridge from the Planar 8 world – this combination isn't available on the standard Planar 6. You can't order it separately or configure it away. In return, the package is unusually affordable for what it offers.
What colour does the Planar 6 RS come in?
The RS Edition comes in the distinctive brushed-aluminium finish with a matching edge – a look of its own that sets it apart from the matte standard Planar 6. A tinted dust cover is included.
Why buy the Rega Planar 6 RS Edition at HD Zürisee?
Because even a ready-made package still needs the right environment. As an authorized Rega dealer we advise you honestly on the right phono stage and speakers, check the setup, and are there for service and fine alignment – our technician Mauri knows every Rega turntable. Personal, in Wädenswil.
