The Rega Fono MC MK4 is a dedicated phono preamplifier for moving-coil cartridges, raising the extremely quiet MC signal to line level with very low noise.
If you're running an MC cartridge, there's no getting around a device like this – and the MK4 handles the job with a calm and precision rarely found at this price point.
Why the Fono MC MK4?
Small DIP switches on the rear let you set input resistance (70, 100, 150 or 400 ohms) and capacitance (1000 or 4300 picofarads) exactly to match your system – so you extract the last bit of resolution. The input stage uses particularly low-noise LSK389 transistors, and the anodised aluminium chassis shields the sensitive electronics from interference. The result is a truly black background against which the finest details unfold.
What you hear
The MK4 behaves like a good interpreter: it adds nothing and leaves nothing out. Voices and instruments are cleanly layered in space, dynamics feel effortless, and even quiet passages don't sink into background noise. It's an especially perfect match for Rega cartridges like the Ania or Ania Pro – these components are practically built for each other.
Who is the Fono MC MK4 for?
Ideal for anyone using a moving-coil cartridge who wants to hear its finer nuances without compromise. Straight talk: it does MC only. If you're running a classic MM (moving-magnet) cartridge, the Fono MM MK5 is the right choice – the MC input would simply overload the MM signal. A tip from the workshop: don't place the external power supply directly next to the tonearm cable, to avoid hum interference.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Fono MC MK4 also suit MC cartridges from other brands?
Yes. Thanks to selectable resistance (70 to 400 ohms) and capacitance (1000 or 4300 picofarads), it works well with MC cartridges from Ortofon, Audio-Technica, Hana and many others. For Rega's own cartridges, like the Ania, it's naturally the obvious choice.
How do I set the DIP switches for a Rega Ania?
For Rega's MC cartridges we recommend 100 ohms resistance, 1000 picofarads capacitance and the high gain setting. This gives the MK4 its most linear performance. Fine-tuning is fine too: a higher resistance often makes the sound a bit brighter and faster.
Do I need a separate ground wire?
Only if your turntable has one. In that case, it connects to the ground terminal on the rear. Rega turntables are usually earthed via the RCA cable, so you often don't need an extra wire at all.
