The Rega Aura Reference MC is a fully balanced Class-A phono preamplifier exclusively for moving-coil cartridges, amplifying the finest groove detail against a truly black background. It's Rega's reference statement for MC amplification.

Over 13 kilograms of aluminium, hand-selected individual transistors, five impedance and four capacitance settings on the front panel – the Aura is built to get out of the cartridge's way.

Why the Aura?

Because it's extremely quiet yet remains flexible. The fully balanced Class-A design processes the signal without the typical crossover distortion, noise drops to a physical minimum – music appears against a truly black background. Using the solid front-panel controls, you match impedance and capacitance to your MC cartridge exactly, in seconds. Passive RIAA equalisation keeps the tonal balance without disturbing the musical flow.

What you hear

A composure with which even the quietest impulses emerge from the groove floor. The Aura places large symphonic works in the room effortlessly and without compression; voices and instruments stand tangible and clear. Honestly: it's incorruptible – a harsh-sounding or badly matched cartridge isn't masked, it's exposed.

Who is the Aura for?

For vinyl listeners with a high-quality MC cartridge who no longer accept any bottleneck in phono amplification – the natural partner for a turntable like the Rega Planar 10. Straight talk: it's a pure MC stage. If you use an MM cartridge, you won't find a matching input here and are better served with an MM phono stage.

Our verdict

The Aura Reference MC is the sonic end point for MC vinyl – uncompromising, honest, built to last for decades. In an equally capable chain, it shows what analogue technology can achieve today. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we tune turntable, cartridge and Aura together as a unit, so nothing becomes the bottleneck.

What the trade press says: “… sounds significantly more coherent and has altogether superior dynamic expression.” – hi-fi+, 2019.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the Aura with cartridges from other brands?

Yes. With five impedance steps (70 to 400 Ω) and selectable capacitance, the Aura suits practically any high-quality low-output MC cartridge – whether from Rega, Ortofon or another manufacturer. We'll help you find the right settings for your cartridge.

Why MC only, with no MM input?

The Aura is consistently designed as a pure MC reference stage and sonically optimised for that. There's no matching input for moving-magnet cartridges; a dedicated MM stage like the Rega Fono MM is the right choice there. Together, the two cover every cartridge type.

Does the Aura need to stay switched on permanently?

For the best sound, Rega recommends leaving it switched on, or powering it up around an hour before listening, so the Class-A circuit is thermally stable. Since it gives off heat in Class-A operation, it should have a few centimetres of clearance above it in the rack.

Why buy the Rega Aura at HD Zürisee?

Because a reference phono stage is only as good as its setup. We fit and align your MC cartridge properly and tune turntable, cartridge and Aura to each other. Fine adjustment and service are done in person by our technician Mauri in Wädenswil.
