The Rega Planar 1 is a manual belt-drive turntable that comes fully ready to play right out of the factory – with a hand-built RB110 tonearm and a pre-fitted Rega Carbon cartridge. No display, no automation, no setup stress: unbox, set up, drop the needle. If you want to get seriously into vinyl without first working through alignment charts, this is the right starting line.

Why the Planar 1?

With the Planar 1, Rega consistently builds in what matters and leaves out the rest. The hand-built RB110 tonearm with play-free precision bearings tracks more cleanly than you'd expect in this class, the 23 mm phenolic platter runs beautifully evenly, and the quiet 24-volt motor keeps speed stable. Everything is set at the factory – you don't need to adjust tracking force or anti-skate yourself. It's exactly this mix of simplicity and seriousness that has made the Planar 1 the reference for getting started.

What you'll hear

The typical Rega drive: timing, momentum and sheer enjoyment. Bass is dry and on point, vocals stand tangibly in the room, and even dense recordings never turn to mush. The Planar 1 doesn't sound "good for an entry-level deck" – it just sounds right. Honestly: that "just one more side, then I'll stop" feeling is exactly why people get hooked on vinyl.

Who is the Planar 1 for? (and who it isn't – straight talk)

Ideal for anyone who wants to get into high-quality vinyl listening without any tinkering – and for anyone looking for an honest, no-nonsense second deck. Straight talk: if you expect full automation, Bluetooth or a built-in phono stage, the Planar 1 will disappoint you – the latter is what the Planar 1 Plus is for. And if you already know you'll soon want to run a high-quality MC cartridge, better start one level up. For a classic, clean entry point, there's hardly anything better.

Our verdict

The Planar 1 is the turntable we at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil have recommended in good conscience for years, whenever someone wants "something proper, but not too complicated." Ready to play, honestly matched, and built to bring joy – an entry point that lasts surprisingly long and never sounds like a compromise.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Rega Planar 1 need a phono preamp?

Yes. The Planar 1 has no built-in phono stage. You need either an amplifier with a phono input (MM) or an external phono stage such as the Rega Fono MM MK5. If your amplifier has no phono input, the Planar 1 Plus with its built-in phono stage is the more convenient alternative.

Does the Planar 1 come with a cartridge?

Yes. The Rega Carbon (MM) is fitted and set at the factory. You don't need to adjust tracking force or anti-skate – unbox, connect, play. That makes the Planar 1 the simplest way into serious vinyl listening.

Do I need to adjust anything on the Planar 1?

Barely anything. Tonearm, tracking force and cartridge are aligned at the factory. You set the unit level, fit the belt for the speed you want and connect it up. You switch between 33 and 45 rpm by hand via the belt.

Can I upgrade the Planar 1 later?

Yes, mainly via the cartridge: switching to a Rega Nd3 or Nd5 audibly lifts resolution and fine detail. There's no external power supply for the Planar 1 – that's reserved for the bigger Planars. We'll tell you which upgrade is genuinely worthwhile for your system.

Why buy the Rega Planar 1 at HD Zürisee?

Because we've lived and breathed vinyl for decades and know which combination brings lasting enjoyment in everyday use. We advise you on phono stage, amplifier and speakers, fit and align on request, and handle the warranty cleanly as an authorized dealer through the official Swiss distributor. Personal and honest, on Lake Zurich.
