The PMC Prodigy1 is a 2-way bookshelf speaker that brings PMC's studio transmission-line technology into a compact, affordable standmount cabinet.

A small speaker with a big pedigree. PMC has been building studio monitors for decades – the Prodigy1 is the entry point into exactly that world, without ever sounding like a budget model.

Why the Prodigy1?

Because it delivers honest, grown-up sound at a sensible price. At its heart is PMC's Advanced Transmission Line (ATL): a folded, front-vented cabinet principle from the studio world that pulls deeper, cleaner bass from a small volume than a comparable bass-reflex box. Add a 27 mm tweeter and a 133 mm natural-fibre mid-woofer that work together cleanly.

What you hear

Open, natural mids, clear treble without harshness, and bass that reaches down to 50 Hz – deeper than the cabinet size suggests. The Prodigy1 doesn't sound like a small speaker, it sounds like music – neutral, honest, with astonishing soundstage for its class.

Who is the Prodigy1 for – and who isn't it for?

For anyone who wants genuine hi-fi sound in small to medium-sized rooms without spending a fortune. Plain talk: it needs solid stands and a decent source to shine – squeeze it into a full bookshelf and just run Bluetooth alongside, and you're leaving potential on the table. For very large rooms, the Prodigy5 or a twenty5i model is the more honest choice.

Our verdict

An entry-level standmount that earns its name: grown-up sound from a compact cabinet, built by people who know their way around studio monitors. Honestly – this much music for this little space is rare.

What the trade press says

"Living up to their name, PMC's new entry-level standmounts sound nothing short of superb for their modest size and price." – What Hi-Fi?, 2023 (5 stars, What Hi-Fi? Award).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need speaker stands for the PMC Prodigy1?

Yes, as a bookshelf speaker the Prodigy1 sounds best on solid stands – around 60 to 70 cm high, so the tweeter sits at ear height. It also works on a shelf, but loses some soundstage and bass control there. A bit of distance from the rear wall helps.

Which amplifier suits the PMC Prodigy1?

A solid integrated amplifier or streaming amplifier with around 20 to 250 watts at 6 ohms. The Prodigy1 is easy to drive, but rewards clean power with more control and dynamics. We're happy to match amplifier, source and cables to your room.

What room size suits the Prodigy1?

Small to medium-sized rooms. Thanks to the PMC transmission line, the bass reaches down to 50 Hz – deeper than the compact size suggests – without booming. In very large rooms, the Prodigy5 or a twenty5i model is a better choice.

Why buy the PMC Prodigy1 at HD Zürisee?

Because we've known since 1997 in Wädenswil which chain gets the most out of an entry-level speaker. We advise you on amplifier, placement and stands, Mauri delivers and sets it up, and as an authorised dealer we handle the warranty properly.
