Ortofon VNL DANCE DJ Cartridge (Elliptical)

The Ortofon VNL DANCE is a DJ cartridge with an elliptical stylus that pulls more detail from the groove than the spherical models in the VNL series.

The cartridge comes without a headshell – you mount it on your own using the standard half-inch fitting. The neon-yellow stylus glows under UV light, which genuinely helps with cueing in a dark booth and isn't just there to look pretty.

The VNL DANCE has an elliptical stylus, the VNL TRIX a spherical one. Elliptical traces the groove more precisely and sounds more detailed, while spherical copes better with hard scratching and back-cueing. According to Ortofon, output voltage (10 mV), tracking force (4 g) and trackability (100 µm) are the same on both.

Do I need a headshell for the VNL DANCE?

Yes. The VNL DANCE is supplied without a headshell and mounts with the standard half-inch fitting, so it fits practically any standard headshell. If you want to get started right away, the Premounted version comes factory-fitted on the Ortofon SH-2 – plug in, set the tracking force, play. A screwdriver is all you need to mount it on your own headshell.

Can I also use the VNL DANCE for listening at home?

Yes, it works well for that. The elliptical stylus retrieves more detail from the groove than a pure scratch tip, and with a 47 kOhm load it runs on any ordinary MM phono input. Note the recommended tracking force of 4 g – your tonearm needs to be able to set this value accurately.
