The Ortofon SPU GTX S is a moving-coil cartridge in the classic SPU format with a built-in transformer and a spherical stylus.
The spherical sibling of the GTX E: same concept, same built-in transformer, but with a round rather than elliptical cut — the more robust, less fussy of the two stylus types.
Why the SPU GTX S?
The built-in transformer makes the GTX S usable on any MM phono input — 4 mV is enough for amplifiers without a dedicated MC stage. The spherical stylus is more forgiving of not-quite-perfect azimuth and anti-skating settings than an elliptical one, and it's gentler on older pressings.
What you hear
The warm, powerful SPU base character, with the round, slightly softer attack that spherical styli typically bring. Not a fine-detail resolver, but relaxed and musical over long listening sessions.
Who is the SPU GTX S suited for?
For SPU beginners with a medium-weight to heavy tonearm who appreciate the built-in transformer and prefer to play it safe rather than chase the last bit of detail resolution. Straight talk: anyone who audibly wants more resolution should reach for the elliptical GTX E — the sonic differences are subtle, but present.
Our verdict
The most down-to-earth way into SPU sound: built-in transformer, robust spherical stylus, no compromise on musicality.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between the GTX S and the GTX E?
The stylus cut: spherical on the S, elliptical on the E. Spherical is more tolerant of setup and gentler on the groove with older pressings, elliptical resolves more finely. Electrically and mechanically, both are identical.
Do I need a separate transformer for the GTX S?
No, it's already built in. A normal MM phono input is enough — that's what sets the GTX S apart from classic SPU cartridges without a built-in transformer.
