The Ortofon SPU Classic G MKII is a moving-coil cartridge in the true-to-original SPU housing with a nude spherical stylus — the modern reissue of the original SPU from 1959.

"Classic" is meant literally here: the housing shape and character take their cue from the original that made SPU famous in the first place. The MKII version brings up-to-date manufacturing and a nude rather than mounted stylus.

Why the SPU Classic G MKII?

The nude spherical stylus sits directly on the cantilever, reducing moving mass compared to classically mounted styli. The result: the unmistakable, warm SPU tone, but with noticeably more control and resolution than older SPU generations.

What you hear

Powerful, warm mids, a rich bass that never bloats, and a relaxed fundamental tonality that allows hours of fatigue-free listening. The spherical cut forgives small setup inaccuracies.

Who is the SPU Classic G MKII suited for?

For anyone who wants the historical SPU sound in its purest form — with a medium-weight to heavy tonearm and an MC-capable phono stage. Straight talk: anyone after more treble resolution should reach for its elliptical sibling, the Classic GE MKII — close in sound and price.

Our verdict

The classic in modern manufacturing: warm, powerful SPU tone with a spherical stylus. The benchmark other SPU cartridges have to measure up to.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Classic G MKII modeled on the original 1959 SPU?

Yes, the housing shape and sound character deliberately follow the historical model. The MKII version brings a nude rather than mounted stylus and more modern manufacturing tolerances.

What's the difference between the Classic G MKII and the Classic GE MKII?

The stylus cut: spherical on the G, elliptical on the GE. Both share housing, impedance, and base character — the elliptical version resolves a bit more finely.

Why buy the Ortofon SPU Classic G MKII at HD Zürisee?
