The Ortofon SPU #1 E is a low-output moving-coil cartridge in the classic SPU housing with an elliptical stylus — the higher-resolution variant of the entry-level SPU.

Same concept as the #1 S, but with an elliptical rather than spherical cut: more contact area with the groove, finer treble detail, in the same classic SPU body.

Why the SPU #1 E?

The elliptical stylus pulls noticeably more detail out of the groove than the spherical variant, without losing the warm, typically SPU base character. For anyone who wants SPU sound but doesn't want to give up on every last nuance.

What you hear

Powerful mids, warm tonality, plus more treble resolution than the spherical #1 S. A sound picture that makes voices and acoustic instruments tangible without sounding analytical.

Who is the SPU #1 E suited for?

For SPU newcomers with a medium-weight to heavy tonearm and a phono stage for low MC levels (0.18 mV) who want a bit more resolution than the spherical #1 S offers. Straight talk: without a suitable phono stage, the #1 E also stays too quiet — clarify that beforehand.

Our verdict

The higher-resolution entry into the classic SPU line: the same substance as the #1 S, a finer stylus, the same need for a suitable phono stage.

Frequently asked questions

Which phono stage does the SPU #1 E need?

An MC-capable phono stage with a load impedance of around 10 ohms, or a step-up transformer. At 0.18 mV output voltage, a normal MM input isn't enough.

Is the price premium over the #1 S worth it?

If resolution matters to you: yes. The elliptical cut resolves more finely, the rest of the technology is identical. If you'd rather have something uncomplicated and forgiving of setup, the spherical #1 S is enough.
