The Ortofon Plattenstabilisator Heavy (350 g, Black) is the weight for high-end and direct-drive turntables with a robust motor — more mass, more calm, more of what's in the groove.

Why the Plattenstabilisator Heavy 350 g?

350 g couples the record firmly to the platter, so vibrations from the motor, the room and the speakers find less of a path to the stylus. At the same time, the extra mass increases the moment of inertia — the platter spins more stably and reacts less to micro-disturbances. The felt underside protects the record, the Ortofon wave-pattern grip sits securely in your hand.

What you get

More control in the bass and an audibly calmer reproduction, especially on high-mass direct-drive turntables: less rumble, more defined low mids, a clearly defined bass range. Place it, remove the stylus, play — the upgrade is done in ten seconds, no tools required.

Who is the Heavy 350 g for — and who isn't it for?

Ideal for high-end, premium and direct-drive turntables with a robust motor and heavy platter. Bottom line: leave light belt-drive turntables (Rega Planar, Pro-Ject Debut & co.) alone and reach for the 240 g standard version instead — 350 g would overload such motors in the long run. And strongly warped records won't be flattened by this weight either — for that you need a real clamp with a counter-plate.

Our verdict

The right weight for heavy, robust turntables: more calm, more control, no effort. Out of place on entry-level decks, a worthwhile fine-tuning tweak on direct-drive turntables.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the 350 g Plattenstabilisator on my Technics SL-1200?

Yes. The Technics SL-1200 (all MK versions as well as GR and G) has direct drive and a solid platter — exactly the kind of turntable the Heavy version is made for; the weight is well within the safe range for its motor and bearing.

What's the difference between a Plattenstabilisator and a clamp?

A Plattenstabilisator sits loosely on the record and works through its mass; a clamp is fastened or screwed onto the spindle and actively flattens the record. The Plattenstabilisator is more universal and gentler on the label, but flattens strongly warped records less thoroughly than a real clamp.

Will the extra weight harm my bearing in the long run?

Not on the turntables it's intended for — robust direct-drive and heavy belt-drive decks. Their bearings and motors are designed for such masses. It only becomes critical on light entry-level turntables; that's where the 240 g version belongs. If in doubt, we'll clarify it with you briefly.
