The Ortofon MC Xpression is a moving-coil cartridge from the Exclusives series, fitted with a nude, specially polished Ortofon Replicant 100 diamond on a boron cantilever. It belongs to Ortofon's no-compromise flagship class — where it's no longer about reason, but about wringing the last drop of truth out of the groove.

Why the MC Xpression?

The Replicant 100 is one of the finest cuts Ortofon makes: its slim, tall contact line sits deep in the groove and reads out even the finest modulations cleanly. It's carried by a stiff, lightweight boron cantilever that passes on impulses without delay. The body is SLM-formed from stainless steel and damped with a proprietary TPE compound — keeping resonances out and the signal clean.

What you hear

Calm, space, and honesty. The Xpression resolves extremely finely without ever sounding analytical — voices stand tangibly in the room, the soundstage is large and stable, and everything stays sorted even in densely packed passages. This is the kind of playback that makes you rediscover records you thought you already knew.

Who is the MC Xpression suited for — and who isn't it for?

Ideal for experienced analog listeners with a first-class turntable, a high-quality tonearm, and a low-noise MC phono stage or a good step-up transformer. Straight talk: with only 0.3 mV output voltage, the Xpression makes high demands on the electronics — on a weak phono input, it starves tonally. And if your foundation isn't at that level yet, you're better off putting your money into a tonearm and phono stage first. Then let's talk about the Xpression.

Our verdict

The MC Xpression brings the Replicant 100/boron combination of the Exclusives series into a — for this league — still-reasonable price range. On the right system, it plays at a level you won't want to give up again anytime soon. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we'll tell you honestly whether your system does it justice — and set it up for you with precision.

Frequently asked questions

Which phono stage does the Ortofon MC Xpression need?

The MC Xpression is a low-output MC with 0.3 mV and needs a low-noise MC phono stage or a high-quality step-up transformer; Ortofon recommends a load above 10 ohms. On a plain MM input, it plays too quiet and lacks power. We'll tell you which combination fits your system.

What makes the Replicant 100 cut special?

The nude Ortofon Replicant 100 has a slim, tall contact line that sits deep in the groove and reads out the finest details — with a precision similar to a Micro-Ridge stylus. The price for that is a critical setup: tracking angle, azimuth, and tracking force all need to be exactly right, or you'll give away resolution.
