The Ortofon MC X50 is a moving-coil cartridge and the flagship of the MC-X series: a nude Micro Ridge diamond stylus on a boron cantilever – the finest tracing geometry and the stiffest cantilever material in this line.

Why the MC X50?

The X50 takes the MC-X series to the top, carrying over the technology of the smaller models – but pushing it consistently further. The coils are wound from high-purity silver wire, and the newly developed magnet system uses a one-piece pole cylinder in the rear magnet yoke for a clean, powerful signal path. The body is produced by metal injection moulding as a stainless-steel honeycomb core: mechanically quiet, low in resonance – and it looks grown-up on the tonearm too.

What you'll hear

The Micro Ridge stylus, with its extremely narrow lateral radius (r/R 2.5/75 μm), sits deeper and more precisely in the groove than an elliptical or Shibata cut. You'll hear exactly that where it gets difficult: in the inner grooves, at high frequencies, in densely packed passages. Less distortion, more calm, more space. The boron cantilever responds instantly and with low moving mass, so transients come through cleanly without smearing.

Who's the MC X50 for – and who isn't it for?

Ideal if you run a good turntable with a high-quality tonearm and an MC-capable phono preamp or transformer. Aligned cleanly and run at around 2.0 grams of tracking force, the X50 pays back the investment. Straight talk: if you're still running an entry-level deck with a light tonearm and a pure MM input, you'll get more enjoyment per franc from a 2M or a smaller MC-X. The X50 is the crowning touch, not the starting point – and that's perfectly fine too. In that case, let's talk about the foundation first.

Our verdict

The MC X50 brings a Micro Ridge diamond and boron cantilever into a price class where that wasn't previously a given, and rounds off the MC-X series nicely at the top. If the deck and phono stage play along, this is an honest upgrade rather than a marketing promise.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Ortofon MC X50 need a special phono input?

Yes. The MC X50 is a moving-coil system with 0.4 mV output voltage and needs an MC-capable phono preamp or a transformer. An MC input with a load of around 100 ohms suits it well. On a pure MM input, it plays too quietly and sounds thin.

Will the MC X50 fit my tonearm?

At 8.6 grams weight and ½-inch mount, the X50 fits the vast majority of tonearms. More important than weight is proper alignment: 2.0 grams tracking force, plus correctly set azimuth and anti-skate. Our technician Mauri will help you with exactly that.

Why buy the Ortofon MC X50 at HD Zürisee?

Because a cartridge of this calibre lives and dies by correct installation. Our seasoned team openly assesses whether the X50 suits your turntable, tonearm and phono stage, fits it professionally and aligns it precisely. We stay by your side for service and any later upgrade – just ask us.
