The Ortofon MC Windfeld Ti is a low-output moving-coil cartridge from the Exclusives series, with a specially polished nude Replicant 100 diamond on a boron cantilever and an SLM-manufactured titanium body.

It carries forward the legacy of the legendary MC Windfeld — only more consistently: the titanium body makes the structure stiffer and lighter and lifts both dynamics and calm to the next level.

Why the MC Windfeld Ti?

The Selective Laser Melting process — introduced by Ortofon in 2008 with the legendary MC A90 — builds the titanium body in one piece, without internal cavities or resonance pockets. The boron cantilever keeps moving mass low, and the three-point mount couples the cartridge mechanically perfectly to the tonearm. The Aucurum coils of gold-plated 6NX copper round out an all-round high-quality package.

What you'll hear

Lifelike, dynamic and open, with an exceptionally clear midrange. The Windfeld Ti stays notably musical throughout and handles microdynamic detail with a fine but never analytically cool touch. Strings sound silky yet with grip, large orchestras play with power but no harshness.

Who is the MC Windfeld Ti for?

For high-end vinyl listeners looking for an MC with both resolution and warmth — a rarity in Ortofon's otherwise mostly neutral lineup. Bottom line: if you want absolute, clinical neutrality, you're better off with the Verismo or MC Diamond; the Windfeld Ti deliberately carries a touch of charm. A low-noise MC phono stage and a good tonearm are essential.

Our verdict

The Windfeld Ti is Ortofon's most musically likeable cartridge at the top end: Stereophile (Michael Fremer, 2017) singled out exactly the lusciousness that makes it stand out in Ortofon's usually neutrally tuned lineup, and praised its soundstaging and tracking security alike. We at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil will tell you whether it suits you better than a more neutral flagship system.

Frequently asked questions

Which phono stage does the Ortofon MC Windfeld Ti need?

A low-noise MC-capable phono preamp or a step-up transformer. At 0.2 mV the Windfeld Ti is a low-output MC; Ortofon recommends a load impedance of more than 10 ohms. We at HD Zürisee will help you find the right combination.

What's the difference between the Windfeld Ti and the MC Verismo?

The Windfeld Ti is tuned warmer and more musical, the Verismo more neutral and uncompromisingly analytical. Both use a Replicant 100 diamond; the Verismo sits on a diamond cantilever, the Windfeld Ti on boron. Which one suits you depends on taste and system.

Which tonearm suits the Windfeld Ti?

A medium-mass, mechanically calm tonearm is a good fit. At 11 g and 13 µm/mN dynamic compliance, the Windfeld Ti is compatible with most high-quality tonearms. We'll work out the ideal resonance frequency range with you if needed.
