The Ortofon MC Vertex is a moving-coil cartridge and the new flagship of the Exclusives series – with a newly developed Vertex diamond on a cantilever made of solid diamond, set in an SLM titanium body with DLC coating.

Introduced at HIGH END 2026 in Vienna, the Vertex is, according to Ortofon, the most advanced MC system the Danes have ever built – the point where diamond, titanium and magnetics come together in one consistently engineered system.

Why the MC Vertex?

Because nothing here is left to chance. The new Vertex diamond with a line-contact cut (tracing radius 4 µm, contact radius 110 µm) sits in the groove with a large surface area and distributes the tracking force more evenly – meaning more stable tracking, less local wear and finer detail. It sits on a cantilever of solid diamond: stiff, light, fast. The body is produced by selective laser melting from titanium, deliberately damped inside, coated outside with an ultra-hard DLC layer. Add a non-magnetic armature, high-purity silver coils and Ortofon's Wide-Range Damping with a platinum disc. It sounds like a materials arms race – but above all, it's consistent control, from the diamond right through to the output.

What you'll hear

Maximum resolution without harshness: the finest structures, clearly outlined voices, a deep and stable soundstage – even when there's a lot going on in the recording. The Vertex traces dynamics without holding back, yet stays cleanly sorted. No effect, no embellishment – just a great deal of truth, served very calmly.

Who's the MC Vertex for – and who isn't it for?

For top-tier analogue chains whose tonearm, phono stage and setup are already at the highest level – a system that no longer needs to "rescue" anything, but lifts out the last remaining bit of truth. Straight talk: on a mediocre or poorly aligned chain, the Vertex is money thrown away – it mercilessly reveals every weakness ahead of it, rather than improving it. Honestly: the chain first, the crowning touch second.

Our verdict

The MC Vertex is Ortofon's statement on what's technically possible in analogue in 2026 – a cartridge for listeners seeking the very end of the road who already have the matching chain. Not a sensible purchase, but a deliberate one. Anyone who arrives there usually knows exactly why.

Frequently asked questions

What makes the Ortofon MC Vertex special?

The MC Vertex is Ortofon's most advanced MC system to date. What's special is a new Vertex diamond with line contact on a cantilever of solid diamond, plus an SLM titanium body with DLC coating and high-purity silver coils. Everything is designed as one consistently engineered system – from the groove to the output.

Which tonearm suits the MC Vertex?

With a compliance of 9 µm/mN, the Vertex harmonises best with medium- to high-mass tonearms, as commonly found on high-end decks. More important than the theory is clean mounting and alignment. Which arm truly suits your setup is best worked out together.

Do I need a special phono preamp for the MC Vertex?

Yes. At 0.3 mV output voltage, the Vertex is a low-output MC and needs an MC-capable phono stage with sufficient gain and a load above 100 ohms. On a preamp that's too weak or purely MM, you'll waste its potential. We'll help you find the right stage.

Why buy the Ortofon MC Vertex at HD Zürisee?

Because a system of this calibre deserves advice and precision. We'll tell you honestly whether your chain does the Vertex justice, mount and align it to perfection in our workshop, and support you with tuning and service – as an authorised Ortofon dealer with our own technician in Wädenswil.
