The Ortofon 2M Blue is an MM cartridge with a nude elliptical diamond – the tier of the 2M series where, for many listeners, the search ends. It sits exactly where price and sound tip into a particularly pleasant balance.

Why the 2M Blue?

The decisive difference from the 2M Red is in the diamond: it's nude, meaning ground directly rather than glued to a carrier. That lowers the moving mass at the stylus tip, and it reads the groove more finely and calmly. Result: more detail, cleaner treble, more calm between the notes – without becoming analytical or cold.

What you hear

More air and resolution than the Red, with the same balanced core character. Voices gain texture, cymbals decay naturally instead of cutting off, and fine spatial information becomes audible. The 2M Blue isn't louder or more spectacular – it's simply more mature.

Who is the 2M Blue for – and who isn't it for?

Ideal for anyone with a good turntable who wants the sweet spot of the MM world without going all the way to Bronze or Black. Bottom line: If you only put on a record now and then and are happy with the Red, you don't need to switch – the money is better spent elsewhere then. But if you listen to music seriously, you won't want to reverse the step from Red to Blue.

Our verdict

For many, the 2M Blue is the right answer to the question "which cartridge". Nude diamond, balanced sound, fair price – the tier where effort and reward meet particularly well. Stereophile lists it as a Recommended Component – deservedly so. If your turntable is up to it, the Blue is a bullseye.

Frequently asked questions

Which phono input does the 2M Blue need?

An MM input (Moving Magnet) with 47 kOhm. Practically every phono preamp has one, as do many integrated amps with a phono stage – an MC input or step-up transformer isn't necessary. That's what makes the 2M Blue so uncomplicated: a lot of sound, little extra effort.

How does the 2M Blue differ from the 2M Red?

In the diamond. The Blue has a nude elliptical cut, the Red a glued one. As a result, the Blue tracks more finely, resolves more detail and sounds calmer. Both use the same generator – you can even upgrade an existing Red to Blue level with the Stylus 2M Blue replacement stylus.

Why buy the Ortofon 2M Blue at HD Zürisee?

Because the best stylus doesn't help much if the mounting isn't right. HD Zürisee sets up your Blue correctly and tells you honestly whether your tonearm and phono stage make the most of it. Goes well with: a matching phono preamp, a good turntable as a foundation, and other cartridges for comparison.
