The Ortofon 2M Black LVB 250 Premounted is a Moving Magnet cartridge from the Beethoven anniversary edition, supplied factory-mounted on an Ortofon headshell. You simply attach the ready-made package to your tonearm's SME bayonet mount, adjust the tracking force – and listen.

This spares you exactly the step most people dread: aligning the nude Shibata stylus with millimetre precision. For a cartridge of this class, that's not a comfort gimmick – it spares you the worry that a boron cantilever might get damaged during mounting.

Why the 2M Black LVB 250 Premounted?

At its core is the LVB 250 technology of the Black series: a nude Shibata stylus on a boron cantilever, combined with optimised damping. The result is a fine detail resolution that usually only starts with considerably more expensive MC cartridges – just with the uncomplicated nature of an MM cartridge. Premounted means: this resolution is available to you without any setup jitters.

What you get

Playback with a lot of calm and clarity. High frequencies resolve cleanly without turning harsh, voices stand out vividly in the room, and even densely arranged passages stay organised. The headshell is precisely pre-aligned – you only need to do the fine-tuning on your tonearm.

Who is the 2M Black LVB 250 Premounted for – and who isn't it for?

Ideal if you have a tonearm with a bayonet connection (SME standard) and want a top-tier cartridge without adjusting it yourself with a magnifying glass. Bottom line: If your tonearm has a fixed headshell, the Premounted version won't help you – then the regular 2M Black LVB 250 is the right choice. And anyone planning DJ scratching is barking up the wrong tree with a Shibata stylus anyway.

Our verdict

The 2M Black LVB 250 Premounted brings one of the best MM cartridges on the market into a ready-to-use form – sonically the same cartridge that won the EISA Award "Best Phono Cartridge 2021-2022" as the 2M Black LVB 250. Anyone who wants the Black LVB sound quality without a test of patience over alignment gets exactly that here.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 2M Black LVB 250 fit every turntable?

Any turntable with a tonearm for bayonet/SME headshells. What matters is that your arm has the effective mass to properly control the medium stylus compliance. If in doubt, just get in touch – we'll match it to your turntable.

What's the advantage of the premounted version?

You don't have to mount and align the delicate Shibata stylus on the boron cantilever yourself – the ready-made unit clicks into your tonearm via the bayonet mount. That reduces the risk of damaging the delicate cantilever during installation. And with several headshells, you switch between cartridges in seconds.

Why buy the 2M Black LVB 250 Premounted at HD Zürisee?

Because we don't just sell cartridges like this – we've been mounting and calibrating them ourselves for decades. We'll tell you honestly whether the Premounted version suits your tonearm or whether you'd be better off with something else. As an authorised Ortofon dealer, we handle the warranty properly, and our technician Mauri helps with installation and alignment.
