The NAD MDC AM230 is a Dolby Atmos audio module that adds height channels, DTS:X and Dirac Live room correction to MDC-ready NAD AV receivers. Not a new device – a clever card that brings your existing receiver up to date.
Why the AM230?
NAD's Modular Design Construction (MDC) follows a refreshingly sustainable idea: instead of replacing the whole receiver, you swap a plug-in card. The AM230 brings object-based surround sound (Dolby Atmos, DTS:X) to AV receivers that shipped with only classic 5.1/7.1 – including Dirac Live for room calibration. That way, a good foundation stays current for a long time.
What you get
A 7.1 chassis becomes an Atmos system: a 5.1.2 setup using the internal amplifier channels, or up to 7.1.4 with an additional amplifier (for example for the height speakers). The four line outputs deliver the extra channels, and 24/192 converters ensure a clean, low-noise signal. Dirac Live corrects your room's timing and frequency response – often the most audible upgrade on a system.
Who is the AM230 suited for? (and who it's not)
For owners of a compatible NAD receiver who want Atmos without swapping the electronics. Straight talk: for the full 7.1.4 you need two additional amplifier channels – a plug-in module alone doesn't conjure up speakers. If you already own a current Atmos-ready receiver, you don't need the AM230.
Our verdict
One of the most compelling upgrade arguments in home cinema: more format support and Dirac for a fraction of a new unit's price. Worthwhile only with a matching chassis and a clean setup, though – and that's exactly where we come in. At HD Zürisee we plan the setup with you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which NAD devices does the AM230 fit?
The AM230 fits the MDC AV receivers NAD T 758, T 777, T 787 and T 187, as well as the M15HD preamplifier. It doesn't work in any other devices. If in doubt, we'll quickly check compatibility with your model for you.
Do I need additional amplifiers for 7.1.4?
For a full 7.1.4 Atmos system, yes: the four line outputs feed an external amplifier for the height channels. Without an extra amplifier, the AM230 uses the internal amplifier channels and gives you a 5.1.2 setup – already a big step up.
Can I install the module myself?
Technically it's a plug-in card, followed by a firmware update and calibration. We recommend professional installation: with us, our technician Mauri handles it, including the Dirac calibration, so everything runs cleanly in the end.
Do I also get Dirac Live with this?
Yes. A Dirac Live LE licence is included and can be upgraded to the full version. It requires the matching firmware on your receiver; the measurement microphone is included.
Why buy the NAD MDC AM230 from HD Zürisee?
Because a module is only as good as its installation. Our seasoned team checks compatibility, installs the AM230 properly and calibrates your room with Dirac. As an authorised NAD dealer in Wädenswil, we're with you from advice to a fully set-up home cinema.
