The Grado Classic RS1 is an open-back over-ear headphone with a 50mm X2 driver in a three-layer wood housing of maple, hemp, and cocobolo.

It's the compact climber of the Classic series – where Grado tradition meets modern build quality without the housing taking on the size of a GS model. Don't confuse it: the Classic RS1 without an "x" is a different model from the Reference RS1x of the older x series.

Why the RS1?

Three woods, three jobs: maple for clarity, hemp for damping, cocobolo for density and depth. This Tri-Wood construction is the real trick behind the RS1. Add to that the 50mm X2 driver, the Signature Gold headband with engraved aluminum-alloy gimbals, and the lighter Signature Silver cable – good mechanics you'll still appreciate years later.

What you hear

Mids that look you right in the eye. The RS1 is more focused than the GS models: voices and guitars sit closer, transients arrive faster, the space is more tightly framed. The L-cushions sit on the ear and deliberately keep the presentation compact.

Who is the RS1 for?

For anyone who prefers listening intensely rather than expansively – rock, singer-songwriter, jazz trio. Honestly: if you want a big orchestral soundstage, reach for the Classic GS1000 instead. And if you have sensitive ears, take a close look at the L-cushions; on-ear isn't for everyone.

Our verdict

The RS1 is the Grado for people who want to get closer. Compact, fast, with a wood housing that looks like craftsmanship rather than an effect – and in the Classic series, the best compromise between character and everyday usability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the Classic RS1 and the Reference RS1x?

Two models from two lines. The RS1x belonged to the Reference x series; the Classic RS1 arrived at the end of March 2026 with the Classic series: reworked X2 driver platform, lighter Signature Silver cable, reworked headband. The Tri-Wood housing of maple, hemp, and cocobolo remains the shared hallmark.

What does Tri-Wood mean on the RS1?

The housing is made of three different woods instead of one: maple, hemp, and cocobolo. Each material dampens and resonates differently, and the combination results in a fuller tonality than a single wood would. Side effect: every housing looks a little different thanks to the grain.

RS1 or GS1000 – which suits me better?

The RS1 is more compact, more direct, and more mid-focused, with L-cushions on the ear. The GS1000 plays more spaciously and relaxed, with large G-cushions around the ear. In short: RS1 for closeness and energy, GS1000 for space and composure. Both share the 50mm X2 driver.

Why buy the Grado Classic RS1 from HD Zürisee?

Because cushion shape and fit are what decide between joy and frustration with Grado – and that's not on any spec sheet. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we'll advise you on that as well as on the right amplifier. Our technician later handles service and spare parts too.
