The Gold Note XS-85 is the brand's floorstanding flagship: a 3-way design with a curved, modular twin-cabinet, hand-built in Italy.
Here, the side panels wear gloss-polished Italian walnut on a black cabinet. On a curved surface, wood grain plays out differently than on a flat one — the lines follow the curve and shift as you walk past. Warm real wood on a modern shape: classic and striking at once.
Why the XS-85?
The curved panels follow the catenary curve, the design principle Gold Note uses everywhere from turntables to speakers. It avoids parallel surfaces, increases rigidity, and reduces standing waves inside the cabinet. The modular twin-cabinet cleanly splits the workload: the woofers work in a vented volume with rear bass reflex, while the mid and tweeter sit in their own sealed chamber. The drivers are developed together with SEAS from Nextel-treated paper.
What you'll hear
A full-grown, realistic sound with deep, controlled bass, an open midrange, and refined highs — from a string quartet to a full orchestra. The XS-85 spans 30 Hz to 30,000 Hz and stays composed even when things get loud and complex. The 200 Hz crossover point takes the deep-bass work entirely off the midrange drivers — one reason vocals stay clean even at volume.
Who's the XS-85 for – and who isn't it for?
For listeners who want the best and have the space for it. Let's be direct: it doesn't belong in a small room or on a weak amplifier — it needs room to breathe and a serious partner at the terminals. Of the three finishes, walnut is the most homely: it takes the edge off the base design's coolness and suits interiors with wood, without making as bold a statement as gold leaf or gloss black piano lacquer. One thing to keep in mind: gloss is gloss, fingerprints and reflections included.
Our verdict
The XS-85 is Gold Note's statement piece — Italian craftsmanship you can see and hear. In gloss walnut, it's the version you can put in a lived-in living room without redecorating around it. Winner of the 2023 Editors' Choice Award from Mono & Stereo. It's earned itself a genuinely good system to match.

Frequently asked questions
Is the walnut real wood or a foil?
Gold Note uses genuine Italian walnut veneer under a gloss-polished clear coat. Because wood is a natural material, the grain varies from piece to piece. For each pair, the manufacturer makes sure the two side panels visually match each other.
How do the three finishes differ sound-wise?
They don't. Gloss walnut, gloss black, and gold leaf only affect the side panel finish. Cabinet, drivers, crossover, steel base, and every spec are identical. The choice is purely about decor, not sound.
Can the XS-85 be bi-wired?
Yes. The Gold Note manual documents both standard wiring and bi-wiring. The bridges are fitted at the rhodium binding posts from the factory, so a single pair of cables per side is enough. For bi-wiring, remove the bridges and run two pairs.
How much room does the XS-85 really need?
More than most people think. At 66.5 centimetres deep with two 9-inch woofers per side, it belongs in a room of about 30 square metres or more, with noticeable clearance from the back wall. In smaller rooms, the A6 EVO II is the more honest recommendation.
How is the XS-85 delivered?
In pairs, and heavy: 180 kilograms net, 200 kilograms packed. All manufacturer figures refer to the pair. Because of the weight, we coordinate delivery, stairwell, and final placement with you beforehand and, on request, set it up on site right away.
Why buy the walnut XS-85 from HD Zürisee?
Because with a speaker of this scale, the system and the room decide the result — not the spec sheet. HD Zürisee in Wädenswil carries Gold Note as an authorised specialist dealer, advises on amplifier and placement, and handles delivery and installation. Get in touch by phone, WhatsApp, or email.
Goes well with
Four ohms and 300 watts of power handling call for a substantial integrated amplifier or a power amplifier with headroom. Matching speaker cables and, very much in the spirit of the house, a turntable round out the system.
