The Gold Note Giotto is a low-output moving-coil cartridge that guides an ultra-fine polished diamond on a boron cantilever – the most uncompromising design in the Gold Note MC range below the flagship models.
It's made in Tuscany, where Gold Note has done practically everything in-house for over 25 years: the coils are wound there, the diamond and cantilever come from the Japanese specialists Adamant-Namiki and Ogura, and the body is machined from a solid block of Duralumin 7000.
Why the Giotto?
Because two elaborate ingredients come together here that you rarely find in the same price class. Boron is lighter and considerably stiffer than aluminium, and the Ultra Micro Elliptical grind at 5 × 150 µm sits deep and precisely in the groove. That gives a linear response from 10 to 40,000 Hz with controlled bass, natural mids and open, never harsh treble. Copper coils and a samarium-cobalt magnet system deliver the wiry dynamics good MC cartridges are known for.
What you hear
Calm and space. The Giotto tracks even the innermost grooves cleanly, separates instruments clearly and builds a believable, three-dimensional soundstage without ever sounding cold or analytical. Vocals and acoustic instruments gain body, and the over 30 dB of channel separation keeps the image stable – detailed, but never fatiguing.
Who is the Giotto for – and who isn't it for?
For vinyl listeners with a fully grown-up chain who want to get the maximum out of a good turntable and tonearm. Straight talk: at 0.35 mV, the Giotto is a low-output MC and absolutely needs an MC-capable phono stage or a step-up transformer – an MM input isn't enough. And on an entry-level deck with a wobbly plastic arm, it's simply wasted; it belongs on a stable, finely adjustable arm.
Our verdict
One of Gold Note's most mature MC cartridges: boron, a fine diamond and a solid Duralumin body keep detail and musicality in a rare balance. We at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil mount and align it properly – tracking force, VTA, azimuth and loading at your phono stage – so it plays correctly from the very first groove.
What the specialist press says: "At the same time, it has a beautifully rounded tonality, offering greater subtlety and poise than the Da Vinci." – Chris Frankland, The Ear, October 2024.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a special phono stage for the Giotto?
Yes. The Giotto is a low-output MC with 0.35 mV and 8 Ω internal impedance and needs an MC-capable phono preamp or a step-up transformer. Gold Note specifies 100 Ω as the load; some data sheets also mention 220 Ω. A stage with adjustable loading gives you room to fine-tune here.
What does the boron cantilever offer over aluminium?
Boron is stiffer and lighter. The cantilever flexes less under groove movement and transfers it to the coils with lower losses. Audibly, that shows up as finer resolution, more precise transients and a more stable spatial image, especially in the treble – the main reason for the gap to the Da Vinci.
Giotto or Da Vinci – what's the difference?
Both are low-output MCs, but built differently. The Da Vinci uses aluminium and a Micro Elliptical diamond, outputs 0.4 mV and wants 47 Ω. The Giotto uses boron and an Ultra Micro Elliptical grind, delivers 0.35 mV at 100 Ω and reaches up to 40,000 Hz.
Will the Giotto fit my tonearm?
With the standardised half-inch mount, it fits practically any high-quality tonearm. At 10 grams of weight, 2 grams tracking force and a compliance of 12, the arm should be cleanly balanceable and finely adjustable – we check and set that during mounting.
Can the stylus on the Giotto be replaced?
No. The boron cantilever is permanently bonded to the coils, as with any moving-coil system – there's no plug-in stylus insert like on MM cartridges, and Gold Note doesn't offer one for its MC models either. If the diamond wears out, we'll clarify with the distributor what's possible.
Why buy the Gold Note Giotto at HD Zürisee?
Because a cartridge in this class lives or dies by its mounting. We fit the Giotto properly, align tracking force, VTA and azimuth, and match the loading to your phono stage. As an experienced team in Wädenswil, we give you honest advice – call, write, or ask us on WhatsApp.
Goes well with
A quiet turntable and a finely adjustable tonearm are a must with the Giotto, and an MC stage with adjustable loading can be found under Phono preamps. Matching setup and care accessories are under Turntable accessories, more cartridges under Cartridges.
