The Gold Note Donatello Red is a high-output moving-coil cartridge that, with 1.8 mV, works directly on a normal MM phono input – without a step-up transformer and without a separate MC stage.

That's the pragmatic side of the Donatello: the mechanics of its big brother, but a generator loud enough for the phono input you probably already have. Upgrading without rebuilding half your system.

Why the Donatello Red?

Because technically it remains a full moving coil and only compromises on level for the sake of practicality. The Micro-Elliptical diamond comes from the development work with Adamant-Namiki, the aluminium cantilever sits in a telescopic titanium sleeve, and copper coils work above a samarium-cobalt magnet. With 140 Ω internal impedance it's designed for the usual 47 kΩ on an MM input, and at 7 grams it remains a lightweight.

What you hear

The fast, airy character of an MC – on a system you already own. The Red plays precisely, openly and with clean layering, with contoured rather than bloated bass. Anyone coming from a simple MM cartridge notices one thing immediately above all: more calm between the notes.

Who is the Donatello Red suited for – and who isn't it for?

For anyone who wants MC quality but wants to keep their amplifier's MM phono stage – no extra device, no cable clutter. Plain talk: if you already have a good MC stage in the rack, the low-output Donatello Gold gets you a touch more fine detail. And the Red isn't a bass-slamming party speaker feed – it's tuned for precision and wants well-kept vinyl.

Our verdict

The simplest route to genuine MC sound, without rethinking your phono chain. For it to show what it can do, setup is what counts – we take care of that at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil and align it to the millimetre on your tonearm.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an MC preamplifier for the Donatello Red?

No. At 1.8 mV the Red is a high-output MC designed for the normal 47 kΩ MM phono input. You connect it to the phono input your amplifier or phono stage already has – a separate MC preamplifier or step-up transformer isn't necessary.

Does that make the Donatello Red an MM cartridge?

No. It's a true moving coil, just with a more powerfully designed generator. It's still the coils that move, not a magnet. This delivers the typically fast MC character – but it costs you the plug-in stylus assembly typical of MM cartridges.

Donatello Gold or Donatello Red – which suits me?

That's decided by your phono input. If you only have MM with 47 kΩ, go for the Red. If you have a good MC stage with 470 Ω loading, the Gold plays a touch finer and reaches up to 40,000 Hz. Mechanically both are built identically.

Does the Donatello Red fit older tonearms from Rega, Dual or Thorens?

As a rule, yes. At 7 grams and with standard half-inch mounting at 9 mm hole spacing, it's compatible with most common tonearms. We set up tracking force, overhang and anti-skate cleanly for you – with older arms in particular, that's doubly worthwhile.

Can I change the stylus of the Donatello Red myself?

No. Even as the high-output variant, it remains an MC cartridge where the cantilever and coils form one unit. There's no replacement stylus assembly for it either. If the diamond wears out after many hours of use, we'll clarify with the distributor what solution Gold Note offers.

Why buy the Donatello Red from HD Zürisee?

Because the best cartridge is worthless if it sits crooked. We mount and align the Red professionally and tell you honestly whether Red or Gold suits your system better. As a specialist shop in Wädenswil with our own technician, we're there for you even after the purchase – just get in touch.

Goes well with

A solid tonearm and a quiet-running turntable get the most out of the Red. If you want to switch to an MC stage later, you'll find one under phono preamplifiers. More cartridges and accessories are available under Tonabnehmer and Alles Vinyl.
