The Gold Note PSU-5 is an external linear power supply for the PH-5 phono stage that calms its supply with dedicated transformers, an inductive dual-choke filter and three low-noise voltage regulators.

It is the most compact and most affordable power supply in the Gold Note range and comes in black – lacquered steel with aluminium, matching the PH-5.

Why the PSU-5?

The PH-5 is a surprisingly capable little phono stage, but its internal supply has to share the space with everything else. The PSU-5 moves it outside: two transformers made specially in Italy form the linear supply, another feeds the dual-choke filter that keeps mains interference away from the PH-5. Three rails, three ultra-low-noise regulators, 25 watts of power consumption – small box, serious engineering.

With the PSU-5, Gold Note follows the same idea as with its larger power supplies: less noise, more calm, more detail. With the PH-5 this means in practice that quiet surface noise recedes, voices appear more clearly outlined and the bass gains more definition.

For owners of a PH-5 who want to improve their phono stage specifically and without much effort. Bottom line: If you have a PH-5.2 or also want to power a Series 5 line source alongside the phono stage, you’re better off with the PSX-5.2 – the successor with two outputs.
