The Gato Audio FM-9 is a passive 2-way on-wall speaker that brings genuine high-end sound to the wall – without a speaker standing in anyone's way.
9 liters of sealed internal volume, a specially adapted 170 mm mid/woofer and just 11 cm of depth: the FM-9 uses the wall behind it to support bass and dynamics, rather than fighting against it. The curved sides and rounded rear let it seem to float rather than stick to the wall. Supplied as a pair, in the current, 2021-revised version.
Why the Gato Audio FM-9?
Because it isn't a bookshelf speaker simply squashed flat, but was calculated from the ground up for wall mounting. The technology comes from the FM-15 bookshelf speaker, but is specifically adapted to the nearby rear wall and its acoustics. Inside work a 38 mm ring radiator tweeter with a powerful ferrite motor and a 170 mm mineral-fiber mid/woofer with low-loss suspension and shorting rings – both drivers that Gato develops itself with Danish transducer specialists. The FusedMASS cabinet, made of several bonded material layers, keeps resonances low, while the in-house PurePHASE crossover ensures clean separation, correct phase alignment and wide dispersion. Developed and built in Copenhagen.
The revised FM series
You get the current series, which Gato fundamentally revised in 2021: new cabinet manufacturing with better fit and finish, improved metal parts, crossovers with high-quality components from Jantzen Audio, assembled in-house on double-sided fiberglass boards and measured with Audio Precision equipment, plus newly developed gold-plated terminals with a firmer grip. This revision also brought the matte Satin Black finish and the choice between a black or silver trim ring.
Tuning the sound to your room
Two three-position switches sit on the back: "Focus" sharpens or smooths the imaging, "Detail" adjusts the fine resolution in the treble. Both work losslessly – you adapt the speaker to your room, your amplifier and your taste without losing any detail. That's worth its weight in gold, especially with a wall-mounted speaker.
What you'll hear
More body than an 11 cm flat cabinet would suggest. The FM-9 plays rich and full, projecting a precise soundstage into the room – even when the listening room is far from ideal. Voices stand free and tangible, and the bass stays taut rather than boomy, because the sealed cabinet uses the wall's support in a controlled way. The magnetically attached fabric covers color the sound as little as possible; the trim ring around the drivers comes in silver (standard) or, for an extra charge, in black.
Who is the FM-9 for – and who isn't it for?
Plainly put: the FM-9 is for anyone who has no space for floorstanders, or simply doesn't want them – in the living room next to the TV, as the front channels in a slim stereo setup, or as rear speakers in a larger multichannel system. It wants a solid wall, mounted via the integrated keyhole brackets with two screws 35 cm apart; four rubber pads prevent resonances. With a 4-ohm load and 86 dB efficiency, it likes power – Gato recommends 50 to 200 watts. If you can place speakers freestanding and want maximum depth, you're better served by the FM-15 or a floorstander from the series.
Our verdict
The FM-9 is the honest answer to a common problem: high-end sound in your living space, without sacrificing floor space. Not a compromise product, but an independently developed speaker with its own drivers, a FusedMASS cabinet and an adjustable crossover. Not sure whether your wall and your amplifier are a good match? Tell us about your room – we at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil will advise you on mounting height, amplifier matching and trim ring choice, and mount the speakers at your home if you like.

Frequently asked questions
How is the FM-9 mounted on the wall?
Via two integrated keyhole brackets on the back and two screws spaced 35 cm apart – the mounting stays invisible. Two drilling templates and four damping pads are included, so the speaker doesn't resonate against the wall. What matters is a solid wall and the right type of wall anchor; we'll mount the speakers at your home if you like.
At what height should the FM-9 be mounted?
Ideally so that the tweeter sits roughly at ear height for your normal listening position. Gato also recommends first placing the speakers loosely against the wall and trying out height and spacing before drilling. We're happy to help with the planning – especially when the TV also has to be factored in.
Can I adjust the sound to my room?
Yes. Two three-position switches sit on the back: "Focus" for imaging sharpness and "Detail" for treble resolution. Both work losslessly. Set both to "neutral" first, find your placement, and only then fine-tune with the switches.
Does the FM-9 need a subwoofer?
Not necessarily. The sealed 9-liter cabinet uses the wall behind the speaker to support bass and dynamics, and reaches down to 45 Hz. In large rooms, or for home cinema with proper deep bass, it makes sense to add a subwoofer.
What changed with the 2021 FM update?
Gato overhauled cabinet manufacturing – better fit and finish, improved metal parts – and retuned the crossovers with components from Jantzen Audio, assembled and measured in-house. New gold-plated terminals, the matte Satin Black finish and the choice between a black or silver trim ring were added too. We supply this current version.
What finishes is the FM-9 available in?
In Black High Gloss, White High Gloss and Walnut High Gloss (real wood veneer), as well as matte Satin Black. You choose the trim ring around the drivers in silver (standard) or, for an extra charge, in black. That way the FM-9 fits your wall, your TV and your other components.
