The Gato Audio FM-50 is the large 3-way floorstanding speaker of the Danish FM series – the flagship model that doesn't just play back a recording, but projects it into the room.
50 litres of volume, two dedicated 170 mm woofers, a dedicated midrange driver and a ring radiator tweeter: the FM-50 reaches down to 32 Hz, stays bone-dry while doing so, and builds a soundstage in which the speakers themselves disappear. Gato explicitly developed it as a “soundstage projector”. Supplied as a pair in the current, 2021-revised version.
Why the Gato Audio FM-50?
Because nothing here has to share the load. Every frequency range has its own, purpose-built driver: a 38 mm ring radiator with a ferrite motor and optimised chamber for treble far beyond the audible range, a 150 mm midrange driver with a mineral-fibre cone for voices and instruments, and two 170 mm woofers with long linear excursion for the bass. The FusedMASS cabinet is a sandwich of MDF, a soft, heavy bitumen interlayer and HDF – three materials with different resonant frequencies that neutralise each other, plus heavy internal bracing. The PurePHASE crossover delivers precise phase control, low linear group delay and wide dispersion; the lossless tonal adjustment lets you tune the speaker to your room and amplifier without sacrificing detail. Designed and built in Copenhagen.
The revised FM series
You get the current series, which Gato thoroughly revised in 2021: new cabinet manufacturing with better fit and finish, improved metal parts, crossovers with high-quality Jantzen Audio components, assembled in-house on double-sided fibreglass boards and measured on Audio Precision equipment, plus newly developed gold-plated binding posts with a firmer grip. This revision also brought the matte Satin Black finish and the choice between a black or silver trim ring.
What you hear
Coherence. The FM-50 plays as one seamless whole: the bass is deep and extremely controlled, the midrange smooth and detailed, the treble clear and free of cabinet resonance. Above all, though, the soundstage is precise and deeply layered – instruments get body and space instead of clinging between the boxes. Even large orchestras and dense productions stay easy to follow. The magnetically attached fabric covers colour the sound as little as possible; the trim ring around the drivers comes in silver (standard) or – for a surcharge – in black.
Who is the FM-50 suited for – and who isn't it for?
Straight talk: the FM-50 belongs in a large room where it can stand freely and breathe – it's 1.07 m tall, 40.5 cm deep and weighs 40 kg each. With 4 ohms and 88 dB sensitivity it isn't difficult to drive, but it deserves electronics on its level; Gato recommends 50 to 300 watts. If you have a medium-sized room or want to sacrifice less floor space, you're better off with the FM-30 – the FM-50 is the statement, not the compromise.
Our verdict
The flagship of the FM series and one of the most convincing floorstanders in its class: uncompromising three-way technology, a cabinet you understand the moment you touch it, and spatial imaging you should hear at least once. Tell us about your room – we at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil will advise you on placement, amplifier pairing and trim-ring choice, deliver the pair, and set it up at your home with our own technician.

Frequently Asked Questions
How big does the room need to be for the FM-50?
It wants a large room. With 50 litres of volume, two 170 mm woofers and extension down to 32 Hz, it only truly opens up once it stands freely with distance from the walls. In small rooms the bass quickly becomes too much – there the FM-30 is the better choice.
What's the difference between the FM-30 and the FM-50?
The FM-50 has 50 litres instead of 30, two larger 170 mm woofers instead of 150 mm, extends down to 32 Hz instead of 37 Hz, and handles up to 300 instead of 250 watts. That means more depth, more dynamic headroom and an even bigger soundstage – but it needs more space and weighs 40 kg instead of 29 kg each.
What amplifier does the FM-50 need?
With 4 ohms and 88 dB it isn't a difficult load, and Gato recommends 50 to 300 watts. An amplifier with solid current delivery, however, extracts noticeably more control and calm from the two woofers. We're glad to advise on the right pairing.
What changed with the 2021 FM update?
Gato overhauled cabinet manufacturing – better fit and finish, improved metal parts – and retuned the crossovers with Jantzen Audio components, assembled and measured in-house. New gold-plated binding posts were added, along with the matte Satin Black finish and the choice between a black or silver trim ring. With us you get this current version.
What finishes is the FM-50 available in?
In Black High Gloss, White High Gloss and Walnut High Gloss (real wood veneer), as well as matte Satin Black. You choose the trim ring around the drivers in silver (standard) or, for a surcharge, in black. This way the FM-50 fits your living room and your other equipment.
Why buy the Gato Audio FM-50 from HD Zürisee?
Because a speaker of this scale only shows half its potential without proper placement. At our shop in Wädenswil we advise you on room, amplifier matching and trim ring, deliver the pair – 40 kg each – right to your door, and set it up with our own technician – drawing on years of experience with high end in the living room.
Goes well with: a matching amplifier and the right cables for the connection.
