The Gato Audio FM-30 is a passive 3-way floorstanding speaker that packs full-grown high-end sound into a remarkably slim column.

30 litres of volume, four dedicated drivers and a front just 21.5 cm wide: the FM-30 stands freely in the room without dominating it, yet still delivers the punchy, impulse-accurate bass and the open midrange of a large speaker. Gato itself calls it a unicorn – a floorstander that is at once discreet and uncompromising. Supplied as a pair in the current, 2021-revised version.

Why the Gato Audio FM-30?

Because a genuine three-way design is at work here, not an inflated two-way. The 38 mm ring radiator tweeter extends far beyond the audible range while remaining remarkably low in distortion; below it, a dedicated 150 mm midrange driver with a mineral-fibre cone takes on the most important range – voices, transients, cymbals – without having to do any bass duty. That's handled by two further 150 mm drivers with long linear excursion. The FusedMASS cabinet is, in places, built up from as many as six bonded material layers with a damping layer, plus heavy internal bracing. The PurePHASE crossover is built with heavy-duty coils, low-resonance capacitors and non-inductive resistors on a fibreglass board, ensuring correct phase alignment and wide dispersion. Add to that the lossless tonal adjustment, which lets you tune the speaker to your room and amplifier. Designed and built in Copenhagen.

The revised FM series

You get the current series, which Gato thoroughly revised in 2021: new cabinet manufacturing with better fit and finish, improved metal parts, crossovers with high-quality Jantzen Audio components, assembled in-house on double-sided fibreglass boards and measured on Audio Precision equipment, plus newly developed gold-plated binding posts with a firmer grip. This revision also brought the matte Satin Black finish and the choice between a black or silver trim ring.

What you hear

Calm and authority. The FM-30 plays big, but never intrusive: the midrange is open and full-bodied because it has its own dedicated driver; bass reaches down to 37 Hz yet stays tight and impulse-accurate rather than soggy. The soundstage remains stable between and behind the speakers, even at higher levels. The magnetically attached fabric covers colour the sound as little as possible; the trim ring around the drivers comes in silver (standard) or – for a surcharge – in black.

Who is the FM-30 suited for – and who isn't it for?

Straight talk: the FM-30 suits medium to large living rooms where a floorstanding speaker is welcome but shouldn't look like a block – the front is only 21.5 cm wide, the plinth 31 cm. With 4 ohms and 87 dB sensitivity it's uncomplicated, and Gato recommends 50 to 250 watts; an amplifier with plenty of current reserve still pays off. It stands freely on its spikes and needs some distance from the rear wall. If you only have a small room, you're better served by the FM-15; if you want even more volume and depth, look at the FM-50.

How big does the room need to be for the FM-30?

What's the difference between the FM-15 and the FM-30?

The FM-30 is a genuine three-way floorstander: its own midrange driver plus two woofers, 30 litres instead of 15, extension down to 37 Hz instead of 40 Hz.
