The Gato Audio FM-15 is the large bookshelf speaker of the Danish FM series – a two-way speaker that fills even bigger rooms with ease.

15 litres of internal volume and a powerful 170 mm woofer/midrange driver deliver rich, tight bass and a soundstage that feels considerably bigger than the cabinet. It sits happily on a sideboard, on a shelf, or – best of all – on a pair of stands. Gato calls it the chameleon of the series: unassuming in the living room, yet always ready to step up from good hi-fi into true high end. Supplied as a pair in the current, 2021-revised version.

Why the Gato Audio FM-15?

Because it scales. The FM-15 is an easy load and plays cleanly on almost any decent amplifier – but the better you treat it in terms of placement, electronics, cables and source, the more it gives back. Inside work a 38 mm ring radiator tweeter with a powerful ferrite motor and a 170 mm woofer/midrange driver with a mineral-fibre cone, low-loss suspension and shorting rings – drivers that Gato develops in-house together with Danish transducer specialists. The FusedMASS cabinet, built from several bonded material layers, damps very strongly and keeps resonances low. The in-house PurePHASE crossover separates cleanly while ensuring correct phase alignment, low group delay and wide dispersion. Add to that the lossless tonal adjustment: you can gently tune the sound to your room, amplifier and taste without losing detail. Designed and built in Copenhagen.

The revised FM series

You get the current series, which Gato thoroughly revised in 2021: new cabinet manufacturing with better fit and finish, improved metal parts, crossovers with high-quality Jantzen Audio components, assembled in-house on double-sided fibreglass boards and measured on Audio Precision equipment, plus newly developed gold-plated binding posts with a firmer grip. This revision also brought the matte Satin Black finish and the choice between a black or silver trim ring.

What you hear

Scale. The FM-15 draws a wide, deep soundstage and keeps vocals open and full-bodied in the centre. Bass reaches down to 40 Hz while staying controlled rather than bloated – even at higher levels it doesn't run out of breath. It resolves detail finely without ever sounding analytical. The magnetically attached fabric covers are designed to colour the sound as little as possible; the trim ring around the drivers comes in silver (standard) or – for a surcharge – in black.

Who is the FM-15 suited for – and who isn't it for?

Straight talk: the FM-15 is for anyone who wants to fill medium to large rooms without setting up floorstanding speakers. On a sturdy stand at ear height it shows what it can do – in an enclosed shelf you give away some of that potential. With 4 ohms and 86 dB sensitivity it's easygoing, and Gato recommends 50 to 200 watts. If you only have a small room or want the smallest possible footprint, you're better off with the FM-8; if you're planning a home cinema with deep low bass, add a subwoofer or go for one of the series' floorstanding speakers instead.

Our verdict

The FM-15 is the most versatile speaker in the FM series: big enough for real dynamics, compact enough for the living room, and honest enough to make every improvement in electronics and placement audible. Not sure whether to go with stands or a sideboard, which amplifier, or which trim ring? Tell us about your room – we at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil will advise you, deliver the pair, and set it up at your home on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the FM-8 and the FM-15?

Volume and reach. The FM-15 has 15 litres of internal volume instead of 8 and a larger 170 mm woofer/midrange driver, extends down to 40 Hz instead of 45 Hz, and fills correspondingly larger rooms. The FM-8 is the more compact solution for small rooms and tight footprints.

Does the FM-15 need speaker stands?

It benefits noticeably from them. On a sturdy stand with the tweeter roughly at ear height, soundstage and imaging come together best. It also works on a sideboard, whereas in an enclosed shelf you give up precision. You'll find matching stands with us.

What amplifier does the FM-15 need?

It's an easy load and plays cleanly on most decent amplifiers – with 4 ohms, 86 dB sensitivity and a recommendation of 50 to 200 watts. The better the electronics, the more it reveals: the FM-15 makes improvements in amplifier, cables and source audible.

What changed with the 2021 FM update?

Gato overhauled cabinet manufacturing – better fit and finish, improved metal parts – and retuned the crossovers with Jantzen Audio components, assembled and measured in-house. New gold-plated binding posts were added, along with the matte Satin Black finish and the choice between a black or silver trim ring. With us you get this current version.

What finishes is the FM-15 available in?

In Black High Gloss, White High Gloss and Walnut High Gloss (real wood veneer), as well as matte Satin Black. You choose the trim ring around the drivers in silver (standard) or, for a surcharge, in black. This way the FM-15 fits your furniture and your other equipment.
