The Gato Audio CDD-1 AE is a CD transport with a built-in D/A converter from the Danish manufacturer Gato Audio.

It plays your CDs via a professional Philips CDpro2LF transport – and at the same time converts external digital sources such as computers or streamers to analog via USB and coaxial. Gato itself aptly calls it „a DAC with a transport“: a top-loader with a magnetic lid on top, and an analog needle display at the front that shows the remaining time during playback and the sample rate with digital sources. Supplied as a single unit.

Why the Gato Audio CDD-1 AE?

Because it takes the CD as seriously as almost no other player does. The famous Philips CDpro2LF transport sits on a solid base milled from a single block of aluminum, resting vibration-decoupled on a Sorbothane tripod – mechanical interference stays outside. Conversion is handled by a dual-differential, dual-mono 24-bit DAC with a low-noise clock and asynchronous upsampling to 24-bit/192 kHz; the asynchronous USB input accepts computers and streamers in a decoupled way. Via the coaxial digital output, you can also feed the transport into another converter. Designed and built in Copenhagen.

What you'll hear

A surprisingly analog, full-bodied sound – exactly the quality reviewers keep praising the CDD-1 for. With a 120 dB signal-to-noise ratio and 0.002% distortion, the background stays inky black and the presentation stays coherent and musical rather than technical. From CD it often sounds a touch more substantial and tactile than from the ripped file – a player that invites focused listening and still works as a high-quality DAC for your digital sources.

Who is the CDD-1 AE for – and who isn't it for?

Plainly put: the CDD-1 AE is for anyone who listens to a large CD collection at reference level and also wants a first-class DAC for a computer or streamer – in one device. It's a pure source with a fixed output level, so it needs a preamp or integrated amplifier behind it; it doesn't replace a preamp. If you want a preamp built in, take a look at the SDA-1 or PRD-3S NPM instead. And if you no longer listen to CDs and only stream, you don't need the transport – a pure streaming DAC will do.

Can I connect external digital sources to the CDD-1 AE?

Yes. Via the asynchronous USB input and the coaxial S/PDIF input, it processes signals up to 24-bit/192 kHz – ideal for a computer, streamer or network player. In addition, a coaxial digital output passes the signal on to another converter. We're happy to discuss which connection best suits your sources.

Our verdict

A Danish top-loader that celebrates the CD while also refining your digital sources as a fully-fledged 24/192 DAC – analog in sound, uncompromising in construction, beautifully made. Frequently asked questions

Is the CDD-1 AE a CD player or a DAC?

Both. It plays Red Book CDs and CD-Rs via the professional Philips CDpro2LF transport, and at the same time converts external digital sources via its USB and coaxial input up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Gato describes it itself as a DAC with a transport.

Do I need an amplifier for the CDD-1 AE?

Yes. The CDD-1 AE is a pure source with a fixed output level – it has no volume control and no headphone output. You connect it to a preamp or integrated amplifier, unbalanced via RCA or balanced via XLR.

Can I connect a computer or streamer?

Yes. The asynchronous USB input and the coaxial S/PDIF input accept signals up to 24-bit/192 kHz – turning the CDD-1 AE into a high-quality converter for a computer, streamer or network player. Via the coaxial digital output, the signal can also be passed on to another converter.

What finishes is the CDD-1 AE available in?

In Black, White and Walnut (real wood veneer), each with a high-gloss lid, plus a custom paint finish (Wunschfarbe) on request. Gato makes the lid to order, to match your other components or your living space.
