The Gato Audio AMP-150 AE is a purely analog integrated amplifier from Denmark with 2× 150 watts at 8 ohms, designed to leave the character of the source untouched.

In walnut high gloss, the solid aluminium body gets a warm wooden surface that looks more like furniture than equipment in the living room. Inside, everything stays the same: a generously sized power supply and an amplifier stage that adds as little of its own character as possible.

Why the Gato Audio AMP-150 AE?

Because it delivers control instead of effect. At 4 Ω it puts out 2× 250 W, distortion stays under 0.05% at rated power, and the signal-to-noise ratio is above 100 dB – this amplifier doesn't dwell on itself. Frequency response spans from 2 Hz to 100 kHz (±3 dB), far beyond anything an ear ever needs; that's precisely why nothing gets out of hand within the audible range. Honestly: units like this get kept for ten years or more.

What you experience

Music that sorts itself out. Voices sit calmly in the centre, bass arrives dry and on time, and even densely packed passages stay clear and organised. On the connection side there's a balanced XLR input, four RCA pairs, preamp outputs on XLR and RCA, and two pairs of speaker terminals with gold-plated banana-compatible binding posts. The whole thing is operated via the large rotary knob or with the included RC-4 remote control.

Who is the AMP-150 AE suited to – and who isn't it for?

Straight talk: the AMP-150 AE is for people who put together sources and speakers deliberately and want a neutral amplifier at the centre of it. If you're after an all-in-one solution with network and DAC, the DIA-250S NPM or DIA-400S NPM is the right home for you. Headphones can't be plugged in directly – that needs a separate headphone amplifier. And if you plan to hide the unit in a closed cabinet, keep the heat dissipation in mind.

Our verdict

An amplifier that stops standing out after two weeks – and that's the biggest compliment there is. Walnut high gloss makes it extra living-room-friendly for anyone who finds black electronics look too technical. Write to us or call HD Zürisee in Wädenswil if you'd like to know which speakers suit it especially well.

Frequently asked questions

Is the walnut on this amplifier real wood?

Yes, it's genuine walnut veneer, finished in high gloss. Gato uses veneer rather than foil, so the grain differs slightly from unit to unit. The surface plays no role sonically: all four finishes are technically identical, and the choice comes down purely to look and decor.

Does the AMP-150 AE have networking or a built-in converter?

No. The AMP-150 AE amplifies only analog signals; there's no D/A converter and no network module on board. Digital sources such as a streamer or a CD player with its own converter go in front of it. If you'd rather have both built into the amplifier, the Gato DIA-250S NPM and DIA-400S NPM are the alternative.

What's included with the AMP-150 AE?

Alongside the amplifier, the box contains a power cable, the Gato Audio RC-4 remote control, a CR2032 battery and the manual. Speaker cables and RCA or XLR connections aren't included – we'd rather match those specifically to your system than bundle in generic ones. Just ask us what suits your combination.

Can I connect two pairs of speakers?

Yes, the AMP-150 AE has two pairs of gold-plated binding posts. That lets you connect one speaker pair in bi-wiring or run a second pair. Keep the permitted impedance of 4 to 16 ohms in mind – we're happy to tell you in advance how that works out in your case.

Why order the Gato AMP-150 AE from HD Zürisee?

Because we've been selling hi-fi since 1997 and know which equipment brings joy in everyday use.
