The Gato Audio AMP-150 AE is an analog stereo integrated amplifier made in Denmark that delivers 2× 150 watts at 8 ohms and passes on the signal as unaltered as possible.
White high gloss turns the solid aluminium housing into a bright piece of furniture rather than a dark block on the shelf. There are exactly as many controls as you need – Gato prefers to put the effort where it's noticed afterwards.
Why the Gato Audio AMP-150 AE?
Because it has reserves built in that you rarely use to the full yet never want to be without. 2× 150 W are available at 8 Ω, 2× 250 W at 4 Ω, and the 4 to 16 ohm design means even awkward impedance curves don't make it break a sweat. Distortion under 0.05% at rated power and more than 100 dB signal-to-noise ratio simply mean, in everyday terms: what comes out the back is what the source sent in. The amplifier is designed and built in Denmark.
What you get
Four RCA input pairs and a balanced XLR input for your sources, plus preamp outputs on XLR and RCA in case a further power amp or an active subwoofer joins later. Two pairs of gold-plated binding posts allow bi-wiring without fiddling with adapters. Sound-wise: open, calm, with a bass that grips rather than pushes – and a background where simply nothing is going on.
Who is the AMP-150 AE suited to – and who isn't it for?
Straight talk: ideal for anyone looking for a pure, powerful analog hub and who deliberately chooses their sources separately. Less suitable if you want streaming, network and D/A conversion in the same housing – for that, Gato offers the DIA-250S NPM and the DIA-400S NPM. If you're often on headphones, you'll need an extra device, since the AMP-150 AE has no headphone jack. And if you like menus and effects: there's nothing to click here.
Our verdict
Understatement with muscle. The AMP-150 AE plays neutral, controlled and without a show – and looks as though someone drew it with a very steady hand. Frequently asked questions
Is the white AMP-150 AE technically different from the black version?
No, all finishes are technically identical. The difference is purely visual: there's black high gloss, white high gloss and walnut high gloss, plus a custom colour in high gloss on request. So you choose by furniture and room, not by sound. If you're unsure which finish will look better in your living room, send us a photo.
Do I need a separate streamer or DAC for the AMP-150 AE?
Yes, as soon as you want to use digital sources. The AMP-150 AE works purely in the analog domain, with no built-in D/A converter and no network module. A streamer, a DAC or a CD player with its own converter belongs in front of it. If you'd rather have everything in one housing, take a look at the Gato DIA-250S NPM or DIA-400S NPM.
Does the AMP-150 AE have a headphone connection?
No, there's no headphone jack fitted. The amplifier is fully focused on driving speakers. If you regularly enjoy music on headphones, you connect a dedicated headphone amplifier to the preamp output – XLR or RCA are available for that. We'll tell you which model suits your headphones.
How much space does the AMP-150 AE need?
It measures 32.5 cm in width, 10.5 cm in height and 43 cm in depth, and weighs 13.8 kilograms. Plan for some extra space at the back for cables and plugs, and give it room to breathe so the heat can escape – it draws under 40 watts at idle.
Why buy the AMP-150 AE at HD Zürisee?
Because we don't sell amplifiers in isolation, but as part of a chain. Our experienced team in Wädenswil looks at which speakers, sources and cables suit your room, and stays reachable afterwards. Service and installation are handled by Mauri, our own technician. Get in touch by phone, WhatsApp or email.
Goes well with
Bright bookshelf speakers or full-sized floorstanding speakers, a streamer or a DAC for digital sources, a turntable for the vinyl shelf – and matching cables to keep the chain clean.
