The Focal Aria EVO X Center is a 2-way bass-reflex center speaker from the French Aria EVO X series that delivers clear, intelligible film dialogue in your home cinema.

With two 16.5 cm Flax drivers and the TAM tweeter carried over from the floorstander line, it's tonally matched exactly to the rest of the Aria EVO X models — the prerequisite for a homogeneous front stage. Supplied as a single speaker.

Its Flax cone — a sandwich of French flax between two fibreglass skins — combines lightness with rigidity and gives voices naturalness and body. The rigid MDF cabinet with a dual bass-reflex port keeps vibrations to a minimum.

Straight talk: the Center is the right choice if you're running an Aria EVO X front stage and want a tonally identical voice channel. Cram it into a closed, tight shelf cubby and you choke the dual bass-reflex port — it needs some clearance behind it. And with a weak 20-watt amplifier it plays below its potential; the 16.5 cm drivers want power (up to 200 W).

How much clearance does the Center need behind it?

Some air is needed, since the bass-reflex port works from the rear. In an open TV cabinet or on a shelf with distance to the back wall it plays cleanly; a sealed, airtight cubby robs it of its fundamental tone.

What amplifier power makes sense?

It handles 40 to 200 watts. A receiver or amplifier with decent reserves brings out the dynamics of the two 16.5 cm drivers; with very little power it stays below its potential.
