Passt der ES-14N auch ins Heimkino?

Ja, als Front- oder Stereopaar funktioniert er gut. Er ist passiv und braucht deshalb einen AV-Receiver oder eine Endstufe mit genügend Kontrolle. Für Filmbass unterhalb 40 Hz ergänzt du sinnvollerweise einen Subwoofer; als reines Musiksystem kommt er ohne aus. Die Ohrhöhe im Sofa entscheidet auch hier.

The Epos ES-14N is a 2-way bookshelf speaker that brings the legendary British monitor ES-14 back to life as a complete new design by Karl-Heinz Fink.

The walnut finish is the warmest in the family — visually, that is; sonically, the ES-14N remains the same uncompromising monitor in every colour. A 178mm polypropylene mid/bass driver and a 28mm aluminium-ceramic composite dome sit inside a heavily damped sandwich enclosure. Supplied as a pair.

Why the ES-14N?

Because nothing about this speaker is borrowed except the name. The cabinet walls are built as damped, layered construction with internal bracing, so resonances never get a chance to join in. The tweeter runs without ferrofluid, and there's a slight, deliberate dip around 2 to 3 kHz — the reason this speaker still sounds relaxed even after three hours. Crossover point is 2,700 Hz.

What you hear

A calm, deep soundstage where every instrument keeps its place, plus a bass with contour rather than volume. The rear-firing reflex port is tuned to 38 Hz, so the foundation is remarkably assured without anything thickening up.

Who is the ES-14N for?

Straight talk: for people who see a speaker not as furniture but as a tool for good music — and who can give it 40 to 50 cm of breathing room from the back wall. Without a stable stand, you're giving away a good part of what you paid for. It's not well suited to bookshelves, wall niches, or a collection that needs more goodwill than truth. From about 15 to 20 m² of room size upward, it really opens up.

Our verdict

Set up correctly, the ES-14N acoustically disappears and leaves only the music in the room — rarely this convincing at this price point. Hi-Fi News awarded it "Outstanding Product" in issue 7/2023.
