The Epos ES-7N is a compact 2-way bookshelf speaker whose tuning can be switched between near-wall and free-standing placement.

That sounds like a detail, but it's the reason this speaker works where compacts usually boom or thin out: in a bookshelf, on a sideboard, close to the back wall. In white satin with a contrasting black baffle — and, as always, delivered as a pair.

Why the ES-7N?

Because of what you don't see. The walls consist of two 8 mm MDF layers with a damping layer in between, the bass-reflex duct is curved, exits centrally at the front, and has internally damped vents so the port doesn't sing along. Add to that the tweeter from the bigger ES-14N: 28 mm ceramic-coated aluminium, without ferrofluid in the gap.

What you hear

A tidy, airy sound picture with clear imaging and a surprisingly powerful midrange. The ES-7N doesn't push itself forward, staying organized even with complex music. If you listen a lot to voices, acoustic music, or jazz, you'll like this quickly.

Who is the ES-7N for?

Honestly: for living rooms up to about 30 square metres, for a shelf, sideboard, or stand — and especially for anyone who has no room at home for floorstanders but still doesn't want to give up grown-up sound. Not for large, open rooms, party volume, or home cinema with deep-bass ambitions. And not for amplifiers that break a sweat at 4 ohms.

Our verdict

Small, uncomplicated, surprisingly grown-up — and one of the few compacts that adapts to the placement instead of the other way around. What Hi-Fi? honoured the ES-7N in the standmount category at the 2025 Awards. Frequently asked questions

What does the switch on the back of the ES-7N do?

It selects between two crossover tunings. Upper setting: for 30 to 50 cm of wall distance. Lower setting: for near-wall placement or the shelf, where mids and highs are lifted slightly relative to the bass. This keeps the tonal balance even across both placements.

Does the ES-7N fit in a bookshelf?

Yes, it was built for exactly that. At 20 cm wide, 29 cm high, and 27 cm deep, it fits standard shelf compartments, and the bass-reflex port sits at the front, so it isn't blocked by the back wall. Switch to the lower setting, done.

How deep does the ES-7N play?

The manufacturer states a frequency response of 48 Hz to 28 kHz. For a cabinet this size, that's a lot — in a living room, it's enough for most music without a subwoofer. If you want to feel organ, synth bass, or cinema effects in your gut, plan for a subwoofer.

Are grilles and spikes included?

Yes, both are included. The grilles clip on rather than being held magnetically. Also included are silicone-rubber spikes that decouple the speaker from the stand plate or shelf and, at the same time, keep it from shifting if bumped.
