Epos ES-7N Bookshelf Speaker, Black (Pair)

The Epos ES-7N is a passive 2-way bookshelf speaker that brings the driver technology of its bigger sibling, the ES-14N, into a shelf- and wall-friendly cabinet.

Designed by Karl-Heinz Fink, the ES-7N shows that its maker prefers measuring to claiming. A two-position switch in the crossover adapts the tuning to the placement — instead of you rearranging your living room around the speaker. Sold and delivered as a pair.

Why the ES-7N?

Because it inherits the tweeter of its big brother: the same 28 mm ceramic-coated aluminium dome, deliberately without ferrofluid in the gap, so it still sounds the same on the third album as on the first. Below it works a 130 mm mid/bass driver with a mica-filled polypropylene cone, 30 mm voice coil, and dual-magnet motor. The cabinet is built from two 8 mm MDF layers with a damping layer in between — knock on it, and nothing rings back.

What you hear

Clear, direct, rhythmically on point. Voices sit cleanly in the room, treble stays refined rather than sharp, and the midrange has more substance than you'd expect from an 11.4-inch-tall cabinet. The curved bass-reflex port exits at the front and is internally damped — that keeps the midrange clean even as volume rises.

Who is the ES-7N for?

Straight talk: for small to medium rooms, for the shelf, for near-wall placement, and for anyone who prefers an honest speaker to a loud one. If you want to flood a large room with deep bass or chase home-cinema slam, this isn't your speaker — a 5-inch cone doesn't produce cinema bass; that's what floorstanders or a subwoofer are for. And the ES-7N prefers clean amplifiers to powerful ones.

Frequently asked questions

Can I place the ES-7N directly against the wall or on a shelf?

Yes. That's what the two-position switch on the terminal is for. In the lower setting, the crossover lifts the mids and highs slightly so the balance stays right even close to a wall or in a bookshelf. The upper setting is meant for 30 to 50 cm of wall distance.

Does the ES-7N need a subwoofer?

Usually not in small to medium rooms. A 48 Hz low-end limit is a lot for this cabinet size. If you're filling a large room, listening to electronic music with real deep bass, or planning a home cinema setup, adding a subwoofer makes sense. For stereo in the living room, the ES-7N is generally enough on its own.

Which amplifier suits the Epos ES-7N?

One that runs stably into 4 ohms. With 86 to 89 dB sensitivity, moderate power is already enough — what matters more than watts is a clean, well-controlled amplifier. Impedance dips to a minimum of 3 ohms, so you should avoid very underpowered devices.

What stands does the ES-7N belong on?

Sturdy stands around 70 cm tall, so the tweeter sits at ear height. Mass is what counts: the heavier and more rigid the stand, the more precise the bass. The included silicone spikes decouple the speaker from the stand plate or shelf.
