The Epos ES-28N is a 3-way floorstanding speaker with a downward-firing bass reflex port, developed by Karl-Heinz Fink as the largest model in the ES series.

Three-way here really means three-way: two 18 cm woofers, a dedicated 13 cm midrange driver and a 28 mm ceramic-aluminium dome. Sold in pairs, this version in satin white.

Why the Epos ES-28N?

Because the division of labour is right. The midrange driver doesn't have to carry any bass and sits in its own chamber — you hear that immediately on voices. The crossover points sit at 330 and 2,700 Hz. The cabinet consists of damped sandwich panels, the front is 50 mm thick and built in two layers, which keeps diffraction and resonance low. The floor-firing port makes setup more relaxed than the 105 cm cabinet height would suggest.

What you hear

Calm. The ES-28N stages wide and deep without artificially inflating the soundstage, and keeps its composure even at raised levels. Honestly: most speakers just get loud when you turn them up. This one gets bigger.

Who is the Epos ES-28N for — and who is it not for?

Straight talk: for medium to large living rooms from around 25 square metres up. In small rooms it doesn't play badly, but below its potential — the bass depth backs up, and you're paying for reserves that never get called upon. There, the ES-14N or ES-7N are the sensible choice. And anyone running a lightweight mini amp should upgrade there first: 86 dB sensitivity wants to see some current.

Our verdict

A speaker that doesn't want to prove anything — and that's exactly why it convinces. Audio Test rated the ES-28N at 95.5 percent in issue 3/2026 and placed it in the reference class. Our seasoned team at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil will clarify the three things that really decide the outcome with you beforehand: room size, placement and amplifier.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ES-28N a genuine 3-way speaker?

Yes. Two 18 cm woofers, a separate 13 cm midrange driver and a 28 mm dome share the spectrum, crossed over at 330 and 2,700 Hz. Midrange and tweeter sit in their own chambers. That keeps the midrange free of bass pressure — the audible difference from a large two-way system.

How big and how heavy is the ES-28N?

25 cm wide, 105 cm tall, 36 cm deep and 35 kg per unit. Epos doesn't publish a separate measurement including the plinth/outrigger, so the footprint is somewhat larger in practice. Plan on carrying it with two people and check that your floor can bear 70 kg per pair.

Can I bi-wire the ES-28N?

No. Epos fits a single, low-mass terminal with 4 mm banana sockets, deliberately without jumpers. So you need exactly one speaker cable pair per side. That saves on transition resistance and makes the cabling cheaper than many expect at this class.

Why buy the Epos ES-28N at HD Zürisee?

Because we don't sell speakers of this size through a catalogue, but through your room. We'll tell you honestly whether the ES-28N fits or whether a smaller model would give you more pleasure — and we deliver, set up and fine-tune on site.
