Epos ES-28N Floorstanding Speaker, Walnut (Pair)

The Epos ES-28N is a 3-way floorstanding speaker from the ES series, with a down-firing bass-reflex port and drivers designed in-house by Karl-Heinz Fink.

Two 18 cm woofers handle the foundation, a 13 cm midrange driver the crucial range in between, and a 28 mm ceramic-aluminium dome the treble. Sold as a pair; this variant in walnut.

Why the Epos ES-28N?

Because the effort goes exactly where it counts. The cabinet is built from damped sandwich panels, the front baffle measures 50 mm and consists of two layers — resonance and edge diffraction have a hard time here. Mid and treble drivers work in their own chambers, crossing over at 330 and 2,700 Hz. None of that is printed large on the box; you hear it anyway.

What you hear

A bass that delivers contour rather than sheer volume, and a midrange that places voices in the room without pushing them at you. The ES-28N doesn't draw attention to itself, but to the music. That's exactly why you end up listening longer than you'd planned.

Who is the Epos ES-28N for — and who isn't it for?

Straight talk: it belongs in medium to large rooms, sensibly from around 25 square metres upward. Put it in a small room and you'll be fighting the bass rather than enjoying it — in that case, the ES-14N or ES-7N are the clearly better choice. Second condition: an amplifier with real substance. At 86 dB sensitivity and an impedance minimum below 4 ohms, power isn't a luxury — it's a requirement.

Our verdict

A grown-up speaker for people who aren't after an effect, but substance. In its April 2025 test, LowBeats credited the ES-28N with large headroom reserves and found it draws over 290 watts at 4 ohms for maximum level — a sign of how much headroom this cabinet has. Frequently asked questions

What room size suits the ES-28N?

Medium to large rooms from around 25 square metres upward. Below that, the low end quickly dominates everything else, and the reserves of the two 18 cm woofers go unused. In smaller rooms, the ES-14N or ES-7N is the more suitable and honest choice.

Does the ES-28N need a subwoofer?

Not in most living rooms. The measured low-end extension reaches down to 30 Hz at -6 dB, and the down-firing port works cleanly without thickening the sound. A subwoofer here is more worthwhile for home cinema with very deep effects than for music.

How is the cabinet constructed?
