The Epos ES-28N is a 3-way floorstanding speaker with a down-firing port and the largest model in the ES series designed by Karl-Heinz Fink.

Two 18 cm woofers, a separate 13 cm midrange driver, and a 28 mm ceramic-aluminium dome share the work. Sold as a pair, this version in the Jade Green finish.

Why the Epos ES-28N?

Because a true three-way system gives the midrange room to breathe. Between 330 and 2,700 Hz, a dedicated driver works in its own chamber — exactly the range where voices and instruments have their character. Add to that a cabinet made of damped sandwich panels with a 50 mm thick, dual-layer front. The port sits on the underside, which makes placement in a real living room noticeably more relaxed.

What you hear

A speaker that doesn't push itself into the foreground. The soundstage stands calm and layered in the room, the bass stays dry, the treble resolves without ever glaring. And yes: a speaker is allowed to look like someone actually had an opinion about it.

Who is the Epos ES-28N for — and who isn't it for?

Straight talk: the ES-28N needs room and power. From around 25 square metres upward, it opens up freely; in small rooms you waste its potential and are more likely to run into bass problems — there, the ES-14N or ES-7N is the more sensible choice. And at 86 dB sensitivity, it's no candidate for the smallest amplifier in the lineup. Bring both, and you get a speaker for the next ten years.

Our verdict

Big, calm, honest — and thanks to its finish, one of the few speakers in this class that doesn't look like technology in a living room. Hi-Fi News's lab report shows an impedance curve between 3.6 and 10 ohms, certifying the ES-28N as a benign load; frequency response deviation is around 2.2 dB between 200 Hz and 20 kHz. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we look at your room with you first — everything else follows from that.

Frequently asked questions

What sets the ES-28N apart from the smaller ES-14N?

Mainly bass foundation and level stability. The ES-28N is a true three-way system with two 18 cm woofers and its own midrange driver, while the ES-14N makes do with less cone area. Both share the same tweeter type, which is why the series sounds all of a piece.

Where is the bass-reflex port located?

On the underside of the cabinet. It radiates via the plinth toward the floor, which brings the bass into the room more evenly and makes the speaker less sensitive to wall proximity than a design with a rear-facing port. That said, it can't do entirely without some distance either.

How loud can the ES-28N play?

Considerably louder than most living rooms can handle. LowBeats found that it draws over 290 watts at 4 ohms for maximum level. What matters is less the sheer volume than the composure: the ES-28N stays organized even at elevated levels.

Why buy the Epos ES-28N from HD Zürisee?

Because with a speaker of this size, we give you more than an order confirmation: an honest assessment of your room, the right amplifier recommendation, delivery, on-site setup, and a technician who brings the whole thing to a clean finish.
