The Denon AVR-X2900H DAB is a 7.2-channel AV receiver with a built-in DAB+/FM tuner that combines surround sound, digital radio and HEOS streaming for the classic living room.

As the successor to the popular AVR-X2800H, it brings a new 32-bit multichannel DAC architecture and more gaming headroom, such as AMD FreeSync and 1440p pass-through. In short, the honest all-rounder that does exactly what most people really need at home – without you having to budget for a cinema right away.

Why the AVR-X2900H DAB?

Because it strikes the balance. Seven amplifier channels deliver 95 watts at 8 ohms (20 Hz–20 kHz, 0.08% distortion, two channels driven), and Denon guarantees at least 70 percent of rated power even with five channels driven simultaneously. That's enough for a clean 5.2.2 Atmos or 7.2 setup. The new DAC delivers clearer imaging and more controlled bass than its predecessor. The built-in DAB+/FM tuner is the icing on the cake: radio runs directly, with no detour via an app or an extra box.

Calibration is handled by Audyssey MultEQ XT, with the microphone included. If you want finer correction later, you can add Dirac Live – for that you need a paid licence and a separate USB measurement microphone. That way, the receiver adapts to your room – not the other way around.

What you hear and see

Dolby Atmos and DTS:X deliver three-dimensional sound that pulls you into films and games; dialogue stays clear, effects are cleanly placed. On the video side, the receiver is 4K/8K-ready: six HDMI inputs (three of them 8K-capable), two outputs, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG and 8K upscaling keep your setup future-proof.

Streaming runs via HEOS Built-in, AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth – in sync across multiple rooms, if you like. If you manage your library with Roon, you can add it directly as a Roon Ready device. Internet radio, network files and vinyl via the phono input naturally also work entirely without a paid subscription.

Who is the AVR-X2900H DAB suited to?

For anyone who wants a fully-fledged, modern home cinema in the living room, values digital radio, and wants a system that grows with them. From a 5.1 starting point to a 7.2 or 5.2.2 Atmos setup, it's all there.

Plain talk: Pre-amp outputs only exist for the two front channels and two subwoofers – full multichannel pre-outs are missing. If you're planning a large, dedicated home cinema with external power amps or four subwoofers, the AVC-X3900H is the better fit. For the typical living-room cinema, though, the X2900H is exactly right.

Our verdict

The AVR-X2900H DAB is the receiver for the vast majority: strong enough for a genuine Atmos experience, modern in gaming and streaming, and equipped with DAB+, which is still in demand in Switzerland. A well-thought-out all-rounder at a fair price. The easiest way to work out which speakers and which room suit it best is to talk to us directly at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the AVR-X2900H DAB and the AVC-X3900H?
The X2900H is the more compact 7.2-channel all-rounder for the classic living room and has a DAB+/FM tuner. The larger AVC-X3900H offers 9.4 channels, 11.4 processing, four subwoofer outputs and full pre-amp outputs – the basis for dedicated, large home cinemas.

Does the AVR-X2900H DAB receive digital radio?
Yes. It has a built-in DAB+/FM tuner on board – so digital radio runs directly, without an extra device. Internet radio via HEOS comes on top. That means you can listen to radio without any streaming subscription at all.

How large can the room be?
With seven amplifier channels and 95 watts at 8 ohms per channel, it confidently drives small to medium-sized living rooms, ideal for 5.2.2 or 7.2 setups. For very large rooms or adding external power amps later, the AVC-X3900H with full pre-outs is the better basis.

Is the AVR-X2900H DAB suitable for gaming?
Yes. Three of the HDMI inputs are 8K-capable, plus there's 4K/120 Hz, VRR, ALLM, AMD FreeSync and 1440p pass-through. PS5, Xbox Series and gaming PCs run smoothly and without disruptive tearing.

Can I upgrade to Dirac Live later?
Yes. Audyssey MultEQ XT with calibration microphone is built in. Dirac Live can be unlocked afterwards – for that you need a paid licence and a separate USB measurement microphone. That way you start off solid and get the finer correction later.
