The Denon AVR-X1800HDAB is a 7.2-channel AV receiver that combines 7 power amplifiers with an 8K HDMI 2.1 connection and a built-in DAB+/FM tuner to make it the most affordable entry into the current Denon lineup.
It's the smallest model in the new Denon lineup with full 8K support – yet it's no compromise device. Seven power amplifiers, Atmos capability and DAB+ in a compact, lightweight housing for anyone starting their first proper home cinema.
Why the AVR-X1800HDAB?
Because it offers everything that matters without the price getting out of hand: 80 watts per channel at 8 ohms, Audyssey MultEQ XT for room correction, two zones for music in another room, and a DAB+/FM tuner that makes a separate radio unnecessary. The headphone output lets you listen quietly without involving the whole neighbourhood on movie night.
At 9 kg, it's also the lightest device in the Denon X series – handy if the receiver needs to go into a rack above head height.
What you hear and see
Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are approximated with Height Virtualization and Virtual:X even without physical height speakers. Six HDMI inputs (three with 8K) and one HDMI output with eARC bring your picture up to date, plus 4K/120 Hz, ALLM, QFT and VRR for gaming. Streaming runs via HEOS, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Deezer and Roon Ready; DAB+, FM and internet radio all work completely without a subscription.
Who is the AVR-X1800HDAB suited for?
For anyone building their first serious home cinema who doesn't want to invest a huge budget straight away. A classic 5.1 or 7.1 setup, extended with two height channels for an Atmos entry point, is the core target group.
Straight talk: There's no phono input built in here – if you want to connect vinyl directly, you'll need an external phono preamp, or go for the AVR-X2800H DAB, which comes with an MM input. And anyone who wants to use more than two height channels at once needs a model with more power amplifiers.
Our verdict
The AVR-X1800HDAB is the honest entry point: no frills, but everything that matters for your first proper home cinema, plus radio reception as a handy extra. If you don't immediately know how many channels you really need, you rarely go wrong here. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we'll help you put together the right first setup.

Frequently asked questions
How many speakers can the AVR-X1800HDAB drive?
7 power amplifiers enable a classic 7.1 setup or a 5.1.2 Atmos configuration with two height channels. For more height channels at once, you need a model with more power amplifiers, such as the AVC-X4800H.
Does the AVR-X1800HDAB have a phono input?
No, there's no built-in phono preamp. A turntable with an MM cartridge can only be connected via an external phono preamp – if you want that built in, go for the AVR-X2800H DAB.
What's the difference to the AVR-X2800H DAB?
The X2800H DAB has more power (95 instead of 80 watts), a built-in phono input, additional subwoofer connection options and more HDMI outputs. The X1800HDAB, in return, is cheaper and lighter – the entry point into the same lineup.
Can I connect headphones to the AVR-X1800HDAB?
Yes, a headphone output is included. Handy for quiet listening or late movie nights without using the speakers.
Is the AVR-X1800HDAB suitable for gaming?
Yes. Three of the six HDMI inputs support 8K/60 Hz and 4K/120 Hz with VRR, ALLM and QFT. PS5, Xbox Series and gaming PCs run smoothly here.
