The Denon AVC-X6800H is an 11.4-channel AV amplifier that combines 11 power amps with 13.4-channel signal processing and full 8K HDMI 2.1 connectivity.

It's the link between the long-established bestseller segment and the flagship line: more power and channels than the X-series below it, but without the premium of the A10H or A1H. For a large but not sprawling home cinema, this is often the most sensible spot in the line-up.

Why the AVC-X6800H?

Because it delivers eleven dedicated power amps at 140 watts per channel into 8 ohms – measured with two channels driven across the full frequency range – while the 13.4-channel signal processing still leaves room for front-wide channels or additional zones. Two ESS Sabre D/A converters and 32-bit DDSC-HD processing handle the translation from bits to sound, and four independent subwoofer outputs provide the foundation in the room.

Audyssey MultEQ XT32 with multi-position calibration is on board, and Dirac Live can be added later if you want. So you get a solid baseline calibration as standard, plus the door open to more precision if you decide to walk through it later.

What you hear and see

Dolby Atmos, DTS:X Pro, Auro-3D (13 channels) and IMAX Enhanced are all natively decoded. Seven HDMI 2.1 inputs (all 8K, HDCP 2.3) and three outputs bring your picture right up to date, plus VRR, ALLM and QFT for gaming. Streaming runs via HEOS, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and Roon support; if you'd rather listen with no subscription at all, use internet radio or your own network library.

Who is the AVC-X6800H for?

For anyone planning a 7.2.4 or 9.2.2 Atmos setup and who still wants reserves for an additional stereo zone or front-wide channels. If you want to expand further later, use the 13.4-channel pre-amp outputs for external power amps.

Straight talk: "AVC" means no radio tuner on board – for that, there's the AVR-X2800HDAB or AVR-X1800HDAB as standalone units. And if you're only planning a classic 5.1 or 7.1 setup with no height channels, you'd be paying here for channels you don't need – the AVC-X2850H is completely sufficient in that case.

Our verdict

The AVC-X6800H strikes the balance between power, channel count and price that's exactly right for most large home cinemas. Not a budget model, but not overkill either. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we're happy to show you whether your room actually makes use of the eleven channels, or whether a step below or above would make more sense.

What the trade press says: "The Denon AVC-X6800H fills even the largest home cinema with professional cinema sound, and still has resources to spare for external stereo zones." – hifitest.de, 11 July 2024, 5.0 out of 5, rated "Reference Class".

Frequently asked questions

How many speakers can the AVC-X6800H drive?
11 power amps directly cover a 7.2.4 or 9.2.2 Atmos setup. The 13.4-channel pre-amp outputs allow additional channels via external power amps, for example for front-wide or a third height layer.

Does the AVC-X6800H have a headphone output?
No, the unit has no headphone jack. Headphone playback runs via Bluetooth receivers that you pair with the receiver.

Does the AVC-X6800H have a DAB+/FM tuner?
No. At Denon, "AVC" stands for models without a radio tuner. Internet radio runs via HEOS; for DAB+/FM directly on the unit, there's the AVR-X2800HDAB or AVR-X1800HDAB.

How many subwoofers can I connect?
Up to four, each independently calibrated. This lets you distribute the bass into the room's corners instead of concentrating it in one spot – which noticeably smooths the frequency response across the whole listening area.

Is the AVC-X6800H suitable for gaming?
Yes. The HDMI 2.1 inputs support 4K/120 Hz, VRR, ALLM and QFT. PS5, Xbox Series and gaming PCs run smoothly, with no dropped frames.

Why buy the Denon AVC-X6800H at HD Zürisee?
Because eleven channels need to be wired and calibrated correctly to show their potential. Our experienced team plans speaker placement and ceiling channels with you and, on request, takes care of delivery and on-site installation.
