The Denon AVC-X3900H is a 9.4-channel AV amplifier that combines nine amplifier channels, 11.4-channel signal processing and HEOS multiroom in one unit for serious home cinema.
It's the direct successor to the bestselling AVC-X3800H – the same well-thought-out concept, but with a new 32-bit DAC architecture, more gaming features and the option of the full Dirac Live suite. In short: the centrepiece you build your cinema around, not the compromise you regret later.
Why the AVC-X3900H?
Because it closes the gap between "nice surround" and "genuine home cinema". Nine dedicated amplifier channels – 105 watts per channel at 8 ohms, measured across the full frequency range with two channels driven – push your speakers with authority, while 11.4-channel signal processing leaves every door open: from a classic 7.2.4 ceiling layout to a front-wide stage. Add to that four independent subwoofer outputs: you can spread the bass across the corners of the room instead of letting it boom from one spot.
The real leap sits inside: a new 32-bit multichannel DAC for more transparency, calm and clarity. And if you're serious about the acoustics, you can unlock the optional Dirac Live suite – including Bass Control and Active Room Treatment. That turns your living room into a properly measured system instead of a guess.
What you hear and see
Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Auro-3D, IMAX Enhanced and 360 Reality Audio – the whole roster of 3D audio formats is natively decoded, with Auro-3D unlocked from the factory at no extra cost. Effects move cleanly through the room, dialogue stays clear, and an orchestral soundtrack gets the weight it needs without pushing too hard.
On the video side, everything is 8K-ready: six HDMI inputs (8K, HDCP 2.3) and three outputs – two for the main room, one for Zone 2 – plus 8K/60, 4K/120, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and 8K upscaling. Gamers get VRR, ALLM, AMD FreeSync and 1440p pass-through: smooth instead of torn. Streaming runs via HEOS, AirPlay 2, Roon Ready and Bluetooth; internet radio and network files also work entirely without a subscription.
Who is the AVC-X3900H suited to?
For anyone who wants a dedicated home cinema or a serious living-room setup with height channels – and room to grow. Via the 11.4 pre-amp outputs, you can later add external power amps or active speakers.
Plain talk: "AVC" means there's no radio tuner on board – for DAB+/FM you need the AVR-X2900H DAB or a separate source. That doesn't matter for the cinema, but it does for the kitchen radio. And for pure stereo music enjoyment at the highest level, a dedicated stereo amplifier is the more honest choice – the X3900H is a cinema all-rounder, not a high-end stereo specialist.
Our verdict
The AVC-X3900H is the sensible sweet spot of the X series: enough power and channels for a proper Atmos cinema, future-proof 8K technology and, if you want it, professional room correction via Dirac. Honestly: most home cinemas don't fail because of the receiver, but because of the planning. That's exactly where HD Zürisee in Wädenswil comes in, helping you personally with speakers, ceiling layout and cabling.

Frequently asked questions
How many speakers can the AVC-X3900H drive?
It has nine amplifier channels and processes 11.4 channels. Eleven speaker terminals are provided, with a maximum of nine active at once – so a 7.2.4 Atmos setup runs straight out of the unit. For the full 11.4 channels, you use the pre-amp outputs and add an external power amp.
What does Dirac Live offer over Audyssey?
Audyssey MultEQ XT32 is already built in and does a solid job measuring your room with the included microphone. The full Dirac Live suite goes further: more precise correction, Bass Control for multiple subwoofers and Active Room Treatment. It's a paid upgrade – Auro-3D, by contrast, is unlocked from the factory.
Does the AVC-X3900H have a DAB+/FM tuner?
No. The "AVC" stands for a model without a radio tuner. Internet radio runs via HEOS; if you want DAB+/FM directly in the unit, go for the AVR-X2900H DAB. For a home cinema, the missing tuner usually isn't an issue.
Is the receiver suitable for gaming?
Yes. The HDMI inputs support 4K/120 Hz, VRR, ALLM and AMD FreeSync, plus 1440p pass-through for PC gamers. Input stays smooth, the picture doesn't tear – PS5, Xbox Series and gaming PCs feel right at home here.
Can I add surround speakers wirelessly?
An announced firmware update will make it possible to use Denon Home speakers as wireless surround speakers – saving you cable runs across the living room. Until then, the rear channels stay wired. We're happy to discuss which combination makes sense for your room.
