The Denon AVC-X2850H is a 7.2-channel AV amplifier that combines 7 power amps with 8K HDMI 2.1 connectivity and the complete Dolby Atmos/DTS:X range.

It's the successor to the long-proven X2800H and the point in the lineup where a classic 5.1 or 7.1 living-room setup gets the most device for the money. No channel overkill, just a solid workhorse for everyday home cinema.

Why the AVC-X2850H?

Because 95 watts per channel at 8 ohms (two channels driven) are entirely enough for most living rooms, and the unit doesn't skimp on features: Audyssey MultEQ XT for room correction, two independent subwoofer outputs, and a phono input for anyone who also wants to spin a record now and then alongside movie nights.

USB-A, USB-B, and USB-C are all present – handy when doing firmware updates or connecting external storage, without hunting for the right cable.

What you hear and see

Dolby Atmos with Height Virtualization, DTS:X, and DTS Virtual:X are natively decoded. Six HDMI inputs (three with 8K) and two 8K-capable outputs bring your picture up to date, plus eARC and HDCP 2.3. Streaming runs via HEOS, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, and Qobuz with Roon support; internet radio and network files also work entirely without a subscription.

Who is the AVC-X2850H suited for?

For anyone planning a classic 5.1 or 7.1 setup, perhaps with two height channels for a first Atmos entry (5.1.2). For a larger setup with more height channels you need more power amps – then the AVC-X4800H is the more consistent choice.

Bottom line: "AVC" here also means: no radio tuner on board. For DAB+/FM built right in, there's the AVR-X2800HDAB or AVR-X1800HDAB as standalone, very similarly equipped models. If you want that tuner, buy there instead of here.

Our verdict

The AVC-X2850H is the honest entry into serious home cinema: enough power, current 8K technology, and a price that leaves room for good speakers. If you don't need more than seven channels, you don't need to look further. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil we show you how to get the best overall sound within this budget.

What the trade press says: "The Denon AVC-X2850H proves to be an extremely talented multi-channel AV receiver that eagerly racks up points, above all through its high-performance acoustics." – AREA DVD, "Preisklassen Referenz" (price-class reference) award in the AV receiver up to 1,000 euros category, September 3, 2025.

Frequently asked questions

How many speakers can the AVC-X2850H drive?
7 power amps enable a classic 7.1 setup or a 5.1.2 Atmos configuration with two height channels. For more height channels at once, the seven power amps aren't enough – you'd need a model with more channels.

Does the AVC-X2850H have a phono input?
Yes, an MM phono input is built in. So you can connect a turntable with a moving-magnet cartridge directly, without a separate phono preamp.

Does the AVC-X2850H have a DAB+/FM tuner?
No. "AVC" at Denon stands for models without a radio tuner. Internet radio runs via HEOS; for DAB+/FM built right in, there's the very similarly equipped AVR-X2800HDAB.

Can I connect two subwoofers?
Yes, two independent subwoofer outputs are available. This helps distribute the bass more evenly in the room instead of concentrating it at a single point.

Is the AVC-X2850H suitable for gaming?
Yes. Three of the six HDMI inputs support 8K/60 Hz and 4K/120 Hz with VRR, ALLM, and eARC. PS5, Xbox Series, and gaming PCs run smoothly here.

Why buy the Denon AVC-X2850H at HD Zürisee?
Because even a beginner's home cinema benefits from good advice. We show you which speakers suit your room, and on request take care of delivery and on-site installation through our technician Mauri.

Goes well with

The AVC-X2850H pairs well with bookshelf speakers for front and surround, a compact subwoofer, and HDMI cables for the full 8K bandwidth. More in the home cinema range.
