DALI Sub E-12 F Grille, Black

The DALI Sub E-12 F grille is the black front cover for the DALI Sub E-12 F – a round, acoustically transparent fabric covering on a frame, held by concealed magnets, that protects the 30 cm aluminium cone.

DALI lists the covering as a standard accessory and spare part; from the factory, the subwoofer ships with a Satin Black baffle and black fabric. This is exactly that variant: round, black, unobtrusive – the best friend of any household where a ball occasionally flies through the living room.

Why a grille on the subwoofer?

Because the Sub E-12 F's cone is made of aluminium and visibly moves a long way in operation. A dent in the metal is irreparable, a scratch stays visible forever – and robot vacuums have no sense of delicacy. The cover costs practically nothing acoustically and removes exactly that risk from everyday life.

What you get

A single piece, matching exactly one Sub E-12 F. The grille is round and sits around the edge of the 12-inch driver; it's held directly against the baffle by concealed magnets, with no pins, sockets or tools at all. The aluminium base, on which the cabinet floats about three centimetres above the floor, stays fully visible.

Who is the grille suited to?

Plain talk: acoustically you lose next to nothing here – deep bass travels through fabric, through furniture and usually through the wall to the neighbour anyway. So the grille is protection and looks, not a sound component. If you want to deliberately show off the laser-engraved aluminium cone, leave it off. If you have children, dogs or an ambitious cleaning schedule, leave it on.

Our verdict

The cheapest insurance package for a subwoofer you'd otherwise only be able to replace outright. As a replacement for a damaged covering, an obvious choice; as a retrofit for a sub run without one, a smart move. Black matches the E-12 F's black baffle and doesn't stand out negatively in any living room.

Frequently asked questions

How does the grille attach to the subwoofer?

Via concealed magnets. DALI states in the technical whitepaper for the Sub E-12 F that the front cover is held by invisible magnets and can be easily removed from the baffle. You need no tools or mounting pins – pressing it on is enough, and so is pulling it off.

Does the grille cover the aluminium base?

No. The cover is round and sits only over the driver on the baffle. The aluminium foot, which lifts the cabinet about 30 mm off the floor, stays visible – so the Sub E-12 F's floating look is preserved even with the grille fitted.

Does the grille affect the bass?

Not audibly. Low frequencies pass through an acoustic fabric practically without loss, unlike what would happen at high frequencies. The grille is pure protection, not a sound filter – you can safely leave it fitted permanently, even at high levels in a home cinema.

Does the grille also fit the smaller Sub E-9 F?

No. The E-9 F has a 9-inch driver and a correspondingly smaller baffle, so it has its own cover. This one is made exclusively for the Sub E-12 F. If in doubt, tell us which model you have – we'll order the right part.
