DALI Opticon Vokal MK2 Grille, Black

The DALI Opticon Vokal MK2 grille is the clip-on front cover for the DALI Opticon Vokal MK2 – acoustically transparent fabric on a form-fitting frame that protects the cones and tweeter without bending dialogue out of shape.

This version carries the black covering that DALI pairs from the factory with the cabinets in Satin Black and Tobacco Oak. Under a TV, black is the sensible colour anyway: whatever stays dark next to the picture doesn't distract during a film.

Why the integrated clip mount?

On the Opticon MK2, the mounts sit in the surrounds of the woofer/midrange and tweeter; that's exactly where the grille's mounting pins engage. No drill holes in the 25 mm thick baffle, no visible fasteners, no tools – and nothing that could rattle during an action scene. That matters especially for the center, since it works the hardest of all in a film.

What you get

A single piece for exactly one center. The frame covers the full front area of the Vokal MK2, including both wood fibre woofer/midrange drivers left and right and the hybrid tweeter in the middle. Whether the center sits on the sideboard or in a rack doesn't matter – the pins hold in any position.

Who is the grille suited to?

Plain talk: in a fully optimised home cinema, critical listeners prefer no grille at all, because any fabric in front of the tweeter physically costs a touch of detail. In the living room, though, the center sits at hip height right next to playing children and curious cats – there, the grille is simply insurance. If you only want to leave it off for looks, know this: replacing a dented dome costs a lot more than replacing a fabric cover.

Our verdict

The most unassuming accessory with the best ratio of effort to benefit. Black suits almost any TV cabinet, forgives dust and turns a center back into a clean, closed component. As a replacement for a damaged cover, it's the obvious first choice.

Frequently asked questions

Does the grille affect speech intelligibility?

Not audibly. The fabric is designed to be acoustically transparent, voices come through clearly and present. Measurably, there's a minimal effect right at the very top of the treble – if you want every last detail for movie night, you can pull the cover off by hand in a second.

Does the grille rattle with heavy deep bass in a film?

No. The form-fitting frame and the mounting pins, which sit in the driver surrounds, pull the cover flush against the baffle. There's no play left for anything to vibrate – not even when something big explodes on screen.

Does this grille also fit the Opticon LCR MK2?

No. The Vokal MK2 and the LCR MK2 have different front areas and driver layouts, the covers aren't interchangeable. There's a dedicated grille for the LCR – in the same three colours, so a mixed front still looks unified.
