The DALI Opticon 6/1/Vokal MK2 with Sub E-12 F is a complete 5.1 home cinema set from the Danish Opticon MK2 series, rounded out by an active 12-inch subwoofer for the deep bass.

Two Opticon 6 MK2 stand at the front, the Opticon Vokal MK2 sits in the center, two compact Opticon 1 MK2 work at the back – here in Black. Underneath, the Sub E-12 F lays the foundation that floorstanding speakers would otherwise have to live beyond their means to provide.

Why the Opticon 6/1/Vokal MK2 set with Sub E-12 F?

Because a home cinema rarely fails on the best single speaker, but on the gap between them – and on a missing foundation. The five speakers share SMC magnet technology and wood fibre cones, with the front and center also getting the hybrid tweeter made of a 29 mm fabric dome and a 17 × 45 mm ribbon. Effects then travel through the room without an audible seam. The active Sub E-12 F takes over below that with 170 watts of Class D power and a 12-inch long-throw aluminium driver, relieving the front speakers exactly where things would otherwise get tight.

What you hear

Up top, it stays neutral and unfussy. The Opticon MK2 tuning doesn't push itself forward, letting voices and instruments simply stand there; the Vokal MK2 keeps dialogue intelligible even while a city collapses next door. And then the subwoofer joins in: down to 28 Hz, up to 112 dB maximum level. That's no longer just bass – it's the part of the film you feel in your chest. Fortunately, you can also turn it down.

Who is the set suited to?

Plain talk: the Sub E-12 F is a serious powerhouse. In a noise-sensitive older building, you won't make new friends with it once the level rises – deep bass doesn't stop at walls. The Opticon 6 MK2 also need room; from around 18–20 m² the balance is right. The five speakers run at 4 Ω and need a load-stable AV receiver, while the subwoofer needs only a power outlet and an RCA cable. If you have the space and want real cinema impact, this is for you; if you can only whisper after ten in the evening, the 5.0 set suits you better.

Our verdict

The 5.1 set is the consistent version of the Opticon home cinema: a homogeneous surround field from a single series, plus a subwoofer that doesn't just hint at the last octave. In Black, the combination recedes visually until the film brings it forward.

Frequently asked questions

Where's the best place to put the subwoofer?

Close to a wall or in a corner gives the most impact. The bass reflex port fires downward, so the sub can sit right against the wall. You do the fine-tuning of level, crossover and phase on the AV receiver; we're happy to help with calibration and placement.

What colours is the Sub E-12 F available in?

DALI offers it in Black Ash and in White Satin Matte. Black Ash matches the black Opticon set directly, no discussion needed. We'll briefly discuss with you which combination looks calmest in your room before ordering.

Are the front grilles magnetic?

Only on the subwoofer. The Sub E-12 F's grille is held by magnets alone. The five Opticon MK2 speakers, on the other hand, have grilles on pins that engage with the surrounds of the woofer/midrange and tweeter – no magnets in the baffle.

Which AV receiver suits the set?

Load stability at 4 Ω and enough power for the front matters. The Opticon 6 MK2 take 25 to 200 watts, the Vokal MK2 30 to 150 watts, the Opticon 1 MK2 25 to 100 watts. The subwoofer brings its own amplifier and only needs a power outlet and an RCA cable.

Will the bass become a problem for the neighbours?

It can, yes. The Sub E-12 F reaches 112 dB and goes down to 28 Hz, and deep bass travels through walls and ceilings. In apartment buildings, decoupling from the floor and a restrained level setting pay off. We'll tell you honestly what's realistic.
