DALI Opticon 6 MK2 Grille, Grey

The DALI Opticon 6 MK2 Grille in Grey is the tool-free clip-on front cover for the DALI Opticon 6 MK2 floorstanding speaker – mottled grey acoustic fabric on a precisely fitted frame that shields the drivers without colouring the sound.

Mottled grey isn't a random shade at DALI – it's the cover that comes as standard with the white Opticon 6 MK2. As a single item, it's there when one has gone missing, when two pairs get mixed up after a move – or when black simply looks too stark for you against a light wall.

Why grey?

Because black against a light wall tends to look like a hole, and white against a dark one like a stain. Mottled grey sits in between: it picks up the surrounding colour instead of working against it. On a white cabinet it almost disappears, on Tobacco Oak it looks warm rather than harsh, and in a living room with plenty of soft furnishings it blends in better than a jet-black rectangle.

What you get

One piece, not a pair – so for two speakers you need two. The frame is cut to fit the Opticon 6 MK2's baffle, the fabric is acoustically open, and it's held by fixing pins that engage with the surrounds of the tweeter and woofer/midrange. You need no tools, and once removed, nothing visible is left behind on the cabinet.

Who is the grey grille suited to – and who isn't it for?

Plain and simple: if you're after the very last touch of air in the treble, you'll prefer listening without this cover too – physics can't be talked around. If, on the other hand, you have kids, cats or a well-meaning cleaner in the house, this protects two wood fibre cones and a sensitive tweeter module for the price of an accessory. And if you find black too dominant in a bright living room, you've already found your real reason.

Our verdict

The least spectacular sensible purchase around your DALI. It doesn't sound better, it just stays looking good longer – and grey is the shade that clashes the least in most living rooms. At HD Zürisee in Wädenswil, we match you to the right size and colour before you order, not after.

Frequently asked questions

Does the grey cover cost sound quality?

Not audibly. The fabric is acoustically open, sound passes through it almost losslessly. If you're listening very closely and want that last trace of air in the treble, take it off for a moment – in everyday use it stays on and keeps dust and curious fingers away from the drivers.

Can the grille also be used on a first-generation Opticon?

It's approved exclusively for the Opticon 6 MK2. DALI makes no compatibility statement for the earlier Opticon series, and we'd advise against trying your luck. Tell us your model and purchase year, and we'll check which cover really fits before you order.

Which cabinet colour does grey suit?

Mottled grey is the cover DALI fits as standard to the Opticon 6 MK2 in White. On a white cabinet it looks understated and almost disappears; on Black or Tobacco Oak it sets a deliberately light contrast. It's a matter of taste – either is fine here.

How do I attach it?

Via fixing pins, entirely without tools. You position the grille at the front, the pins engage with the surrounds of the tweeter and woofer/midrange, and it sits firmly. No drilling, no visible fixings on the baffle. Removing it just takes a gentle pull – that's a one-second job too.
