The Clearaudio VTA Lifter is a mechanical height adjustment for the tonearm base that lets you fine-tune your tonearm's vertical tracking angle (VTA) with precision – even while the record is playing, this version in black.

A finely knurled, graduated adjustment wheel lets you raise or lower the arm reproducibly. That way you can compensate for different record thicknesses without hunting for the Allen key every time – which, as everyone knows, is never where you last left it exactly when you need it for this adjustment.

Why the VTA Lifter?

VTA is the angle at which the stylus sits in the groove. Get it wrong and both fine detail and bass suffer. A thick 180-gram pressing and a thin eighties record need different heights – with the Lifter you find the right point in real time, much like using the focus ring on a camera. Once locked in place, the arm sits rock solid again.

What you'll hear

As you fine-tune, the sound practically snaps into focus: bass gets punchier, highs turn clean instead of harsh, and the soundstage opens up. The difference is especially clear with fine stylus profiles like Shibata or Micro-Line – coarser round/elliptical styli are more forgiving, but reward you less for the effort.

Who is the VTA Lifter for?

For perfectionists with a mixed record collection and a high-quality cartridge who want the best out of every single record. Plain talk: the Lifter builds up higher than a standard tonearm base – on some turntables the dust cover no longer closes afterwards. And mounting it requires a matching hole in the tonearm base; for third-party turntables a drilling template for 9-inch tonearms is included. We're happy to check beforehand whether everything fits your turntable.

Our verdict

An adjustment tool that finally makes one of the most effective turntable settings practical for everyday use: once installed, VTA is no longer a fiddly project but a simple turn of the wheel. Whether the effort is worth it for your turntable, and whether the dust cover still closes afterwards, we'll tell you honestly beforehand at HD Zürisee in Wädenswil.

Frequently asked questions

Does the VTA Lifter fit any tonearm?

It fits almost any common pivoted tonearm. The Lifter has an interchangeable mount and is designed not only for Clearaudio arms like Unify, Satisfy and Universal but also for arms from Rega, Linn or Pro-Ject. Just tell us your turntable and tonearm when ordering, and the right mount will be included.

How much height can I compensate for?

The adjustment range is around 15 millimeters. That's enough for different record thicknesses, from a thin pressing to a heavy 180-gram album, and also for a thicker platter mat. Adjustment is stepless via the graduated wheel, so you can find your way back to a setting you've already dialed in.

Can I adjust it while the record is playing?

Yes, that's exactly what it's made for. You turn the adjustment wheel while the record plays and hear the change directly, instead of having to compare it from memory between two passes. Once locked in place, the arm sits rigid and free of play again.

Does installing it harm the sound?

Quite the opposite: thanks to its solid construction and precise guidance, the tonearm often sits more stably than with a simple clamp. The only thing that matters is clean installation – a crooked Lifter can do more damage than the best VTA setting could ever make up for.
